UTPB baseball tallied each of its six runs in the first two innings Monday afternoon and held off the Newman Jets over the final seven innings in a 6-4 win at Roden Field in Odessa.
The Falcons knocked in the first two of the day when
Daniel Andrade singled into left with the bases loaded to drive in
David Lee while Brian Van Vranken scored when the left fielder bobbled the ball.
Randal Toribio drove in two more with a double into right, scoring
Kevin Barnes and Andrade for a 4-0 lead.
Matt Reyes added to the total in the second on a straight steal of home.
Colin Kowal scored from third when Van Vranken reached on an error at third.
Newman picked up a single run in each the fifth, six, seventh and eighth innings, but left two tunners stranded to end the eighth before being sent down in order in the ninth to end the game.
Chris Cano improved to 4-1 on the season, striking out seven Jets while allowing two runs, one earned, off of two hits and three walks in the 5+ inning start.
Nolan Schattel picked up his third save of the year in recording the final 12 outs, giving up two total runs and one earned run off of four hits and a pair of walks with three k's.
Andrade led UTPB with a 3-4 day at the plate while Reyes, Lee and
David Fetkenher each ended the afternoon with a pair of hits.
The Falcons remain at home next weekend, hosting St. Mary's in a three game set beginning Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
