Cameron took a 3-0 lead in its first trip to the plate and never trailed Friday night, opening a three-game series with an 8-5 defeat of UTPB baseball at Christensen Stadium in Midland.
The Aggies took the lead on a run-scoring triple into center field by Matt Nilmeyer who later scored on a groundout to short. Another extra-base hit later scored Russ Coglan after he reached on the team's second triple of the inning for a 3-0 lead.
The Falcons grabbed two back in the bottom of the frame, scoring their first on an RBI single through the left side of the infield by
Jose Sierra and grabbing the second run on a ground out to first by
Jack Miller with the bases loaded to drive in
David Lee.
After Cameron scored again in the top of the third, the Falcons responded in the bottom of the inning. Brian Van Vranken grounded out to short to score
Daniel Andrade from third, and Sierra followed in the next at bat with his first home run to right field to tie the game at 4-4.
The Aggies came back with a three-run fourth, scoring three unearned runs off a pair of hits to go back in the lead 7-4.
UTPB grabbed one back in the bottom of the fifth when Lee led off the inning with a triple to right center and came in three batters later on a single to right by Miller.
The Falcons were unable to put any more runs together over their final four innings on offense and surrendered a final run to Cameron in the top of the seventh.
Sierra and Andrade each had a pair of hits for UTPB. Sierra and Miller each drove in two runs and Andrade and Lee both scored twice on the night.
The two teams close out the series back in Odessa Saturday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
