UTPB men's basketball recovered from trailing by double digits in the second half, but St. Mary's took control of overtime in an 89-85 loss Saturday night in Odessa.
The Falcons led by as many as 10 points with 10:55 remaining in the second half, but cut it down to 67-62 on four straight points from
Xavier Martin in less than two minutes.
UTPB got within a possession on a
Codye Hatcher dunk and free throw with 6:58 remaining and tied the game on a putback dunk by
Thomas Feeney at 70-70 and 5:42 on the clock.
A
Madison Turner 3-pointer put the Falcons in the lead by four, 74-70 with just under four minutes to play, but the Rattlers scored the next six points at the line to go back ahead.
Codye Hatcher tied the game again with another dunk to even the score at 78-78 with 25 seconds left in regulation, and a St. Mary's field goal attempt before the clock expired fell flat to send the game to OT.
The Rattlers took over from beyond the 3-point line in overtime, getting shots from deep by Marvin Whitt and Marvin Binney to take an 86-79 lead.
A Turner three and two at the line from Martin cut the lead down to two, but Binney responded with a pair at the line and just 18 second remaining to keep the game out of reach.
Feeney stepped up on the day for UTPB, leading the Falcons with 21 points on 6-9 shooting and a 4-7 day from 3-point range. Turner added 17 points with three 3-pointers and Hatcher double-doubled with 13 points and 10 boards. Malcom Hill-Bey missed one fg on the afternoon, scoring 13.
Binney led all players with 23 points for the Rattlers and Justin Alexander added 17 points.
UTPB is back in action Thursday night, traveling to Oklahoma Panhandle State for a 7:30 contest.
