UTPB women's basketball looked to be back above .500 in Heartland Conference play Thursday night, but a mid-court buzzer beater by Texas A&M International sent the Falcons to a 66-64 defeat in Odessa.
The Falcons had turned a four-point Texas A&M International lead into a 61-60 advantage on a layup from
Giselle Loya, a free throw from
Danielle Wilson and a basket from
Valerie Barriga to get back ahead with 1:31 to play.
Jessica Prieto brought the Dustdevils back in the lead with a 3-pointer and 59 seconds remaining, but
Myangel Johnson tied the game on the next possession with a layup to knot the score at 63-63.Â
The Falcons got the ball back with 29 seconds to play on an offensive foul, and Barriga drove into the lane and was fouled on her layup attempt with 2.9 seconds remaining. She hit the back end of a pair to give UTPB a 64-63 lead, but Prieto hit a tightly contested runner from the right side of just inside center court that banked off the backboard and through the net after the final buzzer.
Johnson led all players on the day with 20 points and 15 rebounds, season-highs for her in both categories.
Jessica Woo scored 19 points for Texas A&M International, hitting 4-7 from 3-point range.
The Falcons are back home Saturday afternoon, hosting St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
