UTPB women's basketball need an extra five minutes to get a much-needed victory Saturday afternoon, holding off St. Mary's in an 89-85 overtime win in Odessa.
The Falcons led by as many as six in the final minutes of regulation, going ahead 72-66 with 2:42 to play on a layup by
Danielle Wilson, but the Rattlers scored eight of the final 10 points, including the last basket of the second half by Kealani Marquez to tie the game at 74-74 with 28 seconds remaining. The Falcons missed a shot at the end of the half to send the game into overtime.
OT belonged to UTPB as the Falcons never trailed in the last five minutes of action.
Myangel Johnson put Texas-Permian Basin in the lead 80-78 on a basket in the paint and a 3-pointer form
Brianna Jones the next time down the court gave UTPB a five-point lead with 2:26 remaining.Â
Valerie Barriga hit the back end of a pair at the line to give the Falcons a six-point, 87-81 advantage, but the Morgan Pullins scored the next two baskets to pull St. Mary's within two points and eight seconds remaining.
Giselle Loya his a big pair at the line, putting the Falcons ahead by two possessions with five seconds left to wrap up the four-point win.
Barriga led UTPB with 25 points and 10 rebounds and tied
Brianna Dominguez for the team lead with six assists. Loya added 21 points on a 5-8 night from 3-point range and Johnson hit 8-9 field goal attempts to score 20 points with nine boards.
Dezirae Elias led all players with 27 points for St. Mary's.
The Falcons hit the road next week, traveling to Oklahoma Panhandle State Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
