UT-Permian Basin Women's Basketball started its 2015-16 Heartland Conference schedule with a 69-65 home loss Saturday afternoon against Newman.
The Falcons came out of halftime with a one-point 33-32 lead, and went on top 40-34 on a 3-pointer from
Niniva Taito. UTPB led by as many as nine points in the third after a three from
Sierra LaGrande and a free throw from
Elisa Gonzalez, and Gonzalez ended the period with a pair at the line to hold a 58-49 advantage.
Newman came out hot in the fourth quarter and scored nine straight points to take a 66-62 lead with just under two minutes to play.Â
UTPB was cold on offense in the fourth, hitting just 2-of-15 field goal attempts in the final 10 minutes in being out-scored 20-5 in the decisive quarter.
Taito led the Falcons with 21 points on the night as the guard hit five 3-pointers in the game.
Mali Wright carried Newman, scoring 26 points on 11-18 shooting.
The Falcons are back in action after two weeks off, traveling to Claremore, Okla. for a 5:30 p.m. New Years Eve road game at Rogers State.
