Three days after having their chance at a road win taken away from them, UTPB women's basketball picked up a 66-65 victory over future Lone Star Conference opponent Texas A&M - Kingsville Monday evening in Odessa.
UT-Permian Basin had to fight back after a first quarter that saw the Javelinas hit six of their first seven baskets in the game to get out to a 17-9 lead.
Trailing 26-18 after one, the Falcons pulled within two points after a six point run, four coming by
Elisa Gonzalez.
UTPB took its first lead of the game on a 3-pointer by
Niniva Taito at 1:50 remaining, and
Kayla White put the Falcons ahead by three with 31 seconds to play in the half before heading into halftime with a 38-37 lead.
A 10-2 stretch out of the half by Texas A&M - Kingsville left the Javelinas on top 47-40 in the first four minutes of the second half, but UTPB put together its own run by scoring the next eight points to take the lead back on a pair of free throws from
Sierra LaGrande at 48-47.
Jau'nae Peevy hit a three right before the buzzer to break another tie and give the Falcons a 51-48 advantage.
UTPB never trailed in the fourth quarter and led by as many as eight points two different times, the final on another three from Peevy at 2:33. The large lead proved important as the Javelinas ended the game by scoring nine of the last 11 points, but TAMUK missed a pair of threes to tie the game on their final possession. Tasheena Moore put in the second offensive rebound for a layup to trail by one, but the Falcons inbounded after a foul into an open court and ran out the remaining three seconds for the one-point win.
Taito led UTPB with 17 points on the night, hitting 3-of-4 from 3-point range on the day. Peevy scored 14 points off the bench on 6-of-10 shooting, while Gonzalez added 11 points.
Khadijah Vigil scored eight while grabbing a game-best 13 rebounds on the night.
The Falcons are back after an extended break, returning to action in just under two weeks at West Texas A&M on December 12.
