Falcons Stumble in Loss at Highly-Ranked West Texas A&M 78-48

UTPB women's basketball hung with one of the top team's in the nation through a quarter Saturday afternoon, but the Falcons ran out of answers in a 78-48 loss to #2/3 West Texas A&M at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.

Despite giving up the first six points of the game early in the first, the Falcons rallied to tie the game at 8-8 behind a pair of 3-pointers from Shanna Taylor.

The three-ball put UTPB in the lead 11-10 on a shot from long-range by Niniva Taito, and she tied the game at 16-16 two minutes later.

West Texas A&M closed out the first quarter with the final five points to lead 21-16.

The Lady Buffs kept up the strong play in the second quarter, holding the Falcons to a pair of baskets to outscore them 15-4 and go ahead 36-20.

West Texas A&M kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring 21 points in each quarter to add to its lead in the 30-point win.

Taito and Taylor led the UTPB offense in double figures with Taito scoring 11 points on 4-7 shooting with a 3-5 day from behind the arc to go with a team-leading four assists. Taylor added 10 points and tied for the team lead with six rebounds.

Sasha Watson and Madison McLain led a balanced Lady Buffs offense with 12 points each.

The Falcons stay on the road to open the week, traveling to El Paso for a game against D1 opponent UTEP at 8 p.m.
