Falcons Fall at the End of Overtime in 56-55 Loss at Texas A&M - Kingsville

UTPB women's basketball fell victim to points at the end of the final two periods Friday afternoon as Texas A&M-Kingsville tied the game with a 3-pointer at the end of regulation. Kingsville scored the winning points with one second on the clock in overtime to defeat UT-Permian Basin 56-55 in overtime in Kingsville, Texas.

UTPB turned around a 25-23 defecit at halftime to trail by seven points at the end of the third quarter 31-24.

The Falcons dominated play in the final 10 minutes of regulation, pulling within two early in the quarter when Sierra LaGrande hit a 3-pointer. Victoria Lopez hit a basket to trail 31-29 with 8:43 remaining in the quarter.

UTPB went ahead 39-38 with 3:38 to play when Khadijah Vigil hit a jumper in the paint.

The Falcons trailed in the final couple of minutes but pulled within one when Niniva Taito hit a pair at the line to trail 42-41 with 1:29 remaining.

LaGrande hit another three with three seconds left in the half to put the Falcons back in the lead 44-43, and Taito hit a pair at the line when the Javelinas were assessed a technical for calling a time out despite having no time outs remaining.

But the game was extended when Kaylin Roher hit a 3-pointer before time expired to send the game to overtime at 46-46.

The Falcons trailed early on in OT but took the lead two different times on layups by Vigil. 

Elisa Gonzalez tied the game at 55-55 on a basket with 27 seconds reamining, but Joslyn Smith won the game for the Javelinas by hitting one of two free throws with a second remaining for the 56-55 win.

Vigil led UTPB on the day with 15 points and nine rebounds, hitting 6-of-7 from the field. Gonzalez scored 14 with a team-best four assists to go with eight rebounds, and LaGrande added 11 points off the bench.

The Falcons won't have to wait long to get revenge as they host the Javelinas at the Falcon Dome Monday night at 5 p.m.
