Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hatcher Put-Back as Time Expires Lifts UTPB to 60-58 Win

Codye Hatcher's put-back dunk as time expired Saturday night helped UTPB men's basketball to a 60-58 win on the road against Texas A&M International in Heartland Conference action in Laredo, Texas.

46 seconds earlier, Hatcher went to the line with the Falcons trailing 58-57 and hit one to tie the game. The Dustdevils missed a 3-pointer on their final possession of the game, and UTPB had a missed 3-pointer and layup with the clock running down before Hatcher slammed the second offensive rebound as the clock hit zeros for the game-winner.

The Falcons built on a two-point lead at halftime by scoring the first eight points of the second half. Madison Turner hit a three coming out of the break and a pair of layups from Chris Griffin put UTPB in the lead 41-32 until a Hatcher free-throw gave the Falcons a 10-point lead with 16:43 remaining.

Texas A&M International countered with a 10-point run over the next two and a half minutes, erasing the UTPB advantage to tie the game at 42-42.

The Falcons either led or were tied with the Dustdevils for the remainder of the second half until Vadal Faniel hit a basket with 1:11 remaining to give TAMIU its first lead of the second half at 58-57, one that held for 25 seconds before Hatcher's free throw tied the game at 58-58.

Griffin tied for the game high with 20 points on the day, hitting 8-of-13 field goal attempts. Patrick Carlson had 20 for the Dustdevils, hitting five shots behind the arc for the day.

With eight points, Madison Turner eclipsed 1,000 points for his career. The senior guard has now scored 1,007 total points in his fourth season with the Falcons.

UTPB out-shot Texas A&M International 47.8 percent to 39.1 percent while the Dustdevils hit 15-of-22 at the free throw line to just 10-of-19 for the Falcons.

UTPB returns home this week, facing Lubbock Christian at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
