Falcons Fall 74-73 in Overtime against Lubbock Christian

UTPB men's basketball had a nine-point second half lead slip through its fingers, falling 74-73 on a basket with time running out in overtime against Lubbock Christian at home Thursday night in a Heartland Conference contest.

The Falcons pulled out to a game-high 57-48 point lead with 10:15 remaining in the second half on a layup from Stephan Thompson and a 3-pointer from Madison Turner.

UTPB lost the lead as Lubbock Christian went on a 14-3 run, tying the game at 60-60 on a layup from Isaac Cardona and taking its first lead of the second half on a jumper from AJ Luckey to go ahead 62-60 with 5:21 remaining.

The Chaps broke the 11th tie of the night with 1:49 on a layup from Matthew Alford to grab a 66-64 advantage, buy Codye Hatcher hit a layup of his own with 18 seconds remaining to even the score at 66-66. Lubbock Christian had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but Marcos Schuster's 3-point attempt after LCU put the ball into play with 1.4 seconds remaining in reculation rimmed out to send the game to overtime.

Lubbock Christian scored the first four points of OT, taking a 70-66 lead until Turner scored the first points in overtime for the Falcons on a layup. Hatcher tied the game at 70-70 with 1:23 remaining, and following a pair at the line from Luckey, Chris Griffin hit a three from the top of the arc to give the Falcons a 73-72 advantage with 25 seconds remaining.

Luckey lived up to his name to cap LCU's final posession, hitting a layup with 4.1 seconds remaining to go ahead 74-73. Turner had a chance at the other end for UTPB, but his jumper from the right baseline was off the mark as time expired.

Turner led the Falcons with 19 points, hitting 5-12 from behind the 3-point line on the night. Hatcher added 11 points while Thompson was a perfect 4-4 from the field with nine points and a team-high six rebounds.

Luckey led all five Lubbock Christian starters in double-figures with a team-high 19 points.

UTPB is back at home this weekend, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
