UTPB women's basketball rebounded from falling behind late in the second half Saturday afternoon, scoring the final eight points of the day in a 49-44 victory on the road against Newman at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan.
The Falcons lost the lead for the first time since 17:15 of the first half when Newman went ahead 38-37 on a 3-pointer by Shakira Raynor with 6:49 remaining in the game. The Jets led by as many as five points on another basket by Raynor at 4:51.
The Falcons started their comeback as
Giselle Loya tied the game at 44-44 on a three wiht 2:36 remaining.
Valerie Barriga gave UTPB back the lead with a layup with just 56 seconds remaining. She forced a turnover at 35 seconds left on the clock and made the front end of a pair of free throws after being fouled with 10 secnds left, and hit a pair at the line with just five seconds left in the game to wrap up the five-point win.
Barriga started out the game by scoring the first 12 UTPB points on going 5-of-5 from the field with a pair of threes. She ended the game leading UTPB with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field.Â
UTPB out-rebounded Newman 48-33 on the afternoon, paced by
Trish Simpson and
Danielle Wilson each grabbing eight rebounds.
UTPB is back at home in two weeks, hosting Rogers State at 5:30 on New Year's Day.
