UTPB men's basketball tied its season high with nine 3-pointers while shooting a season-best .500 behind the arc on 18 attemptsand held McMurry scoreles from 3-point range in a 81-66 victory Thursday night in Abilene, Texas.
The Falcons used a 12-1 run over five minutes to erase a three point McMurry lead, evening the game on a
Dwayne Soders layup and free throw, and took a 16-7 lead on a run including 3-pointers from
Madison Turner and
Jason Armstead.
UTPB led by as many as 12 in the first off of another Turner make from downtown, and went into halftime up 38-29 as
Phadarius Taylor beat the buzzer with a jumper as time expired.
The Falcons built the advantage to double digits out of the break as Turner connected from downtown and a pair of
Thomas Feeney free throws gave the team their largest lead of the night at 14 points.
They never led by fewer than 11 in the second half and had the War Hawks down by as many as 18 points on Turner's fifth 3-pointer of the night in shutting down McMurry to improve to 4-2 in the Heartland Conference.
Turner set a season-best with 27 points to lead all players in scoring while grabbing five steals. He hit 7-of-11 from the field, including 5-8 behind the arc, and led the team with 8-10 from the free throw line.
Feeney hit double figures for the 13th time in 14 games, scoring 18 points with four assists.
Anthony Dees added 12 points in the 15-point win.
Kourtney Goff led the War hawks on offense with 19 points and six assists.
UTPB looks to win its third straight Saturday, traveling to Austin for a 3 p.m. conference contest at St. Edward's.
