UTPB men's basketball worked through early foul trouble in both halves Saturday afternoon but held together for an 84-78 victory over Lubbock Christian.
The Falcons broke the game away from a one-possession contest with a 6-0 run as
Thomas Feeney hit the back end of a pair of free throws and converted a missed LCU layup with a basket on the other end, and
Madison Turner capped off the mini-run with a 3-pointer to take a 12-4 lead five minutes into the night.
UTPB led by as many as 12 points in the first half, taking a 21-9 advantage on another Turner three, one of three on the night from the junior guard.
The Chaps got as close as two points late in the half and trailed by just three at halftime thanks to a deep Anthony Brancato 3-pointer with five seconds left in the half to go into halftime within one possession at 39-36.
Action in the second half was much tighter as the lead changed hands eight times and featured five ties. Lubbock Christian scored the first three points of the second half and took the lead on a three-point play by Eli Baker.Â
The game stayed within four points either way for a large majority of the second half until Turner and
Aiden Saunders scored four straight for the Falcons to go up six at 71-65 with 2:39 remaining.
UTPB put the game away by making 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute and wrapped up the win with a layup by Feeney on a full-court pass from
Dwayne Soders to go up nine with eight seconds left in the eventual six point win.
Turner ledd all scorers and was one of five Falcons in double figures with 23 points on 6-of-9 shooting and three 3-pointers on the night. Soders double-doubled with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Dees matched him with 17 points while hitting 6-of-6 from the free throw line.Â
Baker paced the Chaps with 17 points and 13 rebounds, game highs in both categories for Lubbock Christian.
The Falcons are back in action Thursday night, traveling to Abilene, Texas, for a 7:30 p.m. contest against McMurry.
