The University of Texas of the Permian Basin won for the second time in two home matches Tursday night, earning a 25-11, 25-15, 25-18 defeat of University of the Southwest.
The Falcons rolled in the opening set, stringing together a pair of rallies early on with a pair of Kills by
Taylor Harmon to lead 8-2. UTPB hit .324 in the first as a team, recording 14 kills and just three errors on 34 attempts as a 7-2 stretch helped the Falcons gain a 22-8 advantage before they put it away with three in a row behind kills from
Ryley Carman and
Terra Peil.
The Falcons used a strong middle of the second set in picking up a 10-point win in the middle frame. With the Mustangs hanging close at 9-8, UTPB won the next seve points to lead 16-8. After a Southwest block, the Falcons took the next six points to hold a 13-point advantage at 22-9. Looking to take the set at 24-11, the Mustangs scored four in a row before a
Taylor Harmon kill sealed the set victory for UTPB.
The Falcons had to play from behind in the third as Southwest came out after intermission to take a 9-5 lead. UTPB rallied to tie the match at 10-10, and later took a 15-13 lead on a kill by
Keeley Brogdon. The Falcons had little trouble the rest of the set, breaking a 17-17 tie with eight of the final nine points as
Morgann Davis closed out the contest with a pair of kills to wrap up the win.
Luks led UTPB with eight kills in the three set match while also hitting a team-high .217 on the night.
Ariel Fralick scored 17 assists on the evenining and Brogdon led the Falcons with 17 digs.
UTPB hits the road this weekend for a pair of Heartland Conference contests, traveling to Newman for a 7 p.m. match Thursday night and Oklahoma Panhandle State for a 12 p.m. Saturday afternoon match up.
