The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's soccer team was unsuccessful in its 2013 home opener Friday night, dropping a 2-0 decision to Colorado Mesa.

The visiting Mavericks got on the scoreboard in the game's 28th minute when Veronica Rodriguez volleyed in a cross sent from the left wing into the center of the box.

CMU added a second goal late in the second half as Isa Revelle's shot from the right side of the box was deflected by UTPB goalkeeper Bridget Esquivel but had enough momentum to find the lower left corner of the net.

Esquivel stepped up to make 12 saves off of 14 shots on goal on the evening as Colorado Mesa held a 28-7 total shot advantage for the match.

Sal Gebre led the UTPB offense with three shots and she and Jessica Saulter each had a pair of shots on goal.

UTPB returns home Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., to take on Fort Lewis.
