The UTPB men's and women's tennis seasons came to a close Friday at the 2013 Heartland Conference Tennis Championships as the men advanced to the semifinals with a 5-1 quarterfinals win over Newman before a 6-0 defeat to St. Mary's in the semis. The UTPB women bowed out of the tournament with a 5-2 quarterfinals loss against Dallas Baptist.
The UTPB men picked up a pair of doubles wins as
Adam Cheney and
Jonathan Rutledge won 8-1 over Mitchel Whitmer & Ramon Nola, and
Justin Delgado/
Meliton Morales scored an 8-3 defeat against Jeff Wherrit/ Jared Ferris.
The Falcons needed to complete just three singles matches to move on in the tournament and won the only three matches played to completion.
Alvaro Sifuentes earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory, Delgado scored a 6-1, 6-4 win and Jaxon Imler took a 6-1, 6-1 win.
UTPB was shut out in the semifinals match up against St. Mary's, with the Rattlers taking wins in each of the three doubles matches and the three singles matches that finished.
On the women's side,
Alehanna Kehr-Gomez and
Shelby Greene scored the lone point in doubles play, defeating Leah Smith & Alexa Mentesana 8-2. UTPB lost all four of the singles matches that were completed Friday morning.
Jonathan Rutledge and
Olivia Baltazar were named to the 2013 Heartland Conference Men's and Women's Tennis All-Conference Teams, it was announced at the conclusion of the championships.
Rutledge finished the 2013 season 7-12 in singles action with a 4-4 record at #1 singles on the year, and combined to finish the year 14-8 in doubles action.
Baltazar ended up 10-8 in singles action for the 2013 season with a 7-11 doubles mark.
