UTPB men's basketball cracked the century mark for the second time in three games and had five players finish with at least 12 points in improving to 4-1 on the year with a 106-89 defeat of Texas A&M - Kingsville in the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Classic at Hampton Inn Court in Kingsville, Texas.
The Falcons got out to a hot start, taking a 10-5 lead by making their first four field goals of the game with
Thomas Feeney getting five points on a layup to start the game with a 3-pointer two possessions later.
The Falcons trailed for just one possession Friday night when Adonis Bailey broke a 10-10 tie by hitting the back end on a pair of free throws, but UTPB took the lead back 14-11 on a pair of layups by
Dwayne Soders and Feeney on back-to-back possessions.
UTPB increased its lead out to 12 points on a 10-1 run eight minutes into the first keyed by threes from
Andre Rieder and
Madison Turner. The Falcons led by as 20 points scoring nine of 12, and ended the half with the final five points of the first to lead by 19.
The Falcons increased their lead coming out of halftime, leading by as many as 31 two different times on a dunk by
Keith Martin and triple by Feeney halfway through the second.
Texas A&M - Kingsville cut the lead down in the waning minutes, pulling to within 14 points at 4:03 left in the game, but the outcome was never in doubt as the Falcons kept the score well above double digits in closing out the 17-point victory.
Soders continued his special start to the season, setting a new season-high in points for the fourth straight game with 30 to lead all players. His 16 free throws in 20 attempts was a season high and his 10 rebounds give him a double-double in each game this year.
Feeney added 24 points on 7-of-9 shooting, hitting a pair behind the arc and dished out a team-best five assists.
Keith Martin scored 19 points and helped UTPB to a 45-21 rebounding advantage with a season-best and game-high 14 boards.
Anthony Dees added 13 points and
Phadarius Taylor contributed 12 points as the Falcons shot a season-high 58 percent from the field.
Ronald Scott and Ta'Quan McDew led the Javelinas in scoring, each getting 24 points.
The Falcons return to the court in Kingsville Saturday afternoon, looking to defeat Cameron for the second time in November at 2:30 p.m.
