Swimming Earns Pair of Wins Over McMurry

10/18/2013 10:04:00 PM

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's and women's swim teams won a combined 18 events as the UTPB men earned a 158-47 win and the women knocked off the War Hawks 108-66.

"We had a great meet today, having our first away meet was a big challenge and I think we did well in those conditions," said first-year swimming coach Cameron Kainer.

"I want to thank Bev Ball and the entire McMurry staff for a wonderful meet and great hospitality. It was great coming back to Abilene and swimming against a great West Texas program.

"Yet again, our freshman had some good swims and showed that they are making an immediate impact on this team. Our returners have taken the competition well and have been showing good leadership to the freshmen.

"I am excited about our first long trip to Hendrix next meet and it will be a great test against some good D2, D3, and NAIA schools. This will be our first glimpse of a conference like meet."

The Falcons swept the top spots in six different races, placing all of their swimmers ahead of McMurry in the Men's 1,000 Freestyle (won by Daniel Moran in 10:34.51), the Men's 200 Free (won by Hunter Gnoza in 1:51.30), the Women's 200 Individual Medley (won by Courtney Johnson in 2:23.81), the Men's 100 Fly (won by Mark Dix in 54.30), the Women's 100 Free (won by Lauren Porras in 56:36), and the Men's 500 Free (with Mauricio Craig placing first in 5:02.86).

Sammi Strohmeyer set her second school record in as many weeks Friday night with a time of 1:01.18 in winning the Women's 100 Fly. Coach Kainer also noted strong performances by Craig with his win in the 500 Free and a :58.96 by Alex Ruata in taking first in the Men's 100 Breast.
