UTPB men's basketball built up a sizable second half lead that kept a late scoring drought from costing them the victory Tuesday night as the Falcons hung on to earn their second win of the year against Angelo State 65-62 in San Angelo, Texas.
UTPB won the prior meeting between the two teams 79-67 in Odessa three weeks ago.
UT-Permian Basin trailed by as many as eight points in the opening half, but 3-pointers from
Madison Turner and
Anthony Dees in the final two minutes helped the Falcons close the gap to 32-30 at the half.
The second half belonged to the Falcons as
Keith Martin gave UTPB its first lead of the night 49 seconds in with a three-point play.
A Dees three and Martin dunk pushed the advantage out to four with 17:09 to play.
Back-to-back threes from Dees and Turner increased the UTPB lead to eight at 13:37 of the second, and the Falcons led by as many as 14 points as
Fabian Sebastian scored twice around a
Xavier Martin layup halfway through the second half to put UTPB up 53-39.
Those points came in handy at the end of the game as Martin hit the team's final field goal with 3:36 left in the game. UTPB scored just one point in the remainder of the game on a
Tyler Reynolds free throw that put the team up 65-62.
Angelo State had a pair of chances to tie the game on their final possession, but a pair of missed 3-pointers by Jovan Austin and Reggie Sutton fell short as time expired.
Turner led all scorers in the game, scoring 16 on 6-12 shooting from the field while hitting 4-7 from behind the arc. Dees added 13 points on 5-6 shooting on the night while hitting 3-4 of his three-point attempts.
UTPB shot 43 percent behind the three point line with Turner and Dees hitting all of the team's seven made 3-pointers.
The Falcons return home this weekend, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
