The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's soccer team scored midway through the second half against New Mexico Highlands to bring the contest to a 1-1 tie, but a pair of goals in the final minutes from the visiting Cowgirls handed the Falcons a 3-1 loss Monday afternoon at the UTPB Soccer Field.
Following a fifth minute goal that led to NMH leading the remainder of the first half, Nicole Leffingwell scored UTPB's first goal of the season. She broke down the right side of the field after corralling the ball off of a defender, dribbled into the 16 yard box and shot from outside the six yard box, finding the left side of the net past keeper Ashley Flanigan for her first of the season at 68:49.
New Mexico Highland would regain the lead in the 81st minute as Marci Johnson scored her first of two goals in the game taking a pass in the middle of the field off of a breakaway down the right sideline and putting it into the left side of the goal to reclaim the advantage.
Johnson added an insurance goal seven minutes later on an odd-man break after a goalkeeper free kick.
Victoria Ramirez and Jenna Easley each made six saves in goal as each play one half.
Flanigan earned her first win of the season in playing the second half in net.
UTPB hits the road for the first time this year, traveling to Canyon, Texas, for a 4 p.m. contest against West Texas A&M Thursday, September 6.
