ACOSTA NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL CONFERENCE, THREE OTHERS HONORED

3/1/2012 10:17:00 PM

For the third time in her four-year career, senior Tammy Acosta was named to the All-Heartland Conference first team in a vote by coaches throughout the league.  Teammate Taniqua Ards, who led the Falcons in scoring, was named to the second team, while Teisha King and Lauren Unger were named to the honorable mention squad.

Acosta, who will most likely go down as one of the best ever to wear a Falcon uniform, is the school's all-time leading scorer and made free throws and is in the top-five in numerous offensive categories.  She has her eyes set on the school's assist mark, which she is two away from etching her name on that record as well.  She already leads the Heartland Conference in assists for a career with 532 which is 182 more than the next player to ever play in the league.

This year the El Paso, Texas native is averaging 10.5 points and has 142 assists, including 11 in the last game of the regular season which set a new school record in that category.  She is also second on the team in steals with 30 and is one of the league's best free throw shooters at nearly 72 percent.

Ards, who is finishing up her second year with the team, is eighth in the Heartland in scoring with 11.4 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.1 an outing.  She has scored in double-digits in 17 of the 23 games she has played in, including a career-high 22 against Henderson State in the Falcon Dome earlier this season.

King has been a force both offensively and defensively as she is second on the team in scoring with 10.6 points a game and leads the squad in rebounds with 5.7 a contest.  She is also one of the team's best defenders as she leads the Falcons with 40 steals.

Unger is one of the best three-point shooters in the country as she has made 73 from behind the arc and has done it with efficiency, knocking down 44 percent which is tops in the Heartland.  Throughout her career, the Midland, Texas native has made 241 three-pointers and currently holds the Heartland Conference all-time three-point baskets made record.  Her final season has been extra special as Unger has hit at least four three-pointers on nine different occasions, including a career-high seven, which she has done in two of the last three games.  She has been held without a three-pointer only twice this season and 18 for her career.
