box score

SAN ANTONIO – Tammy Acosta scored 10 points against St. Mary's, but none more important than the three-pointer she drained with three second to play, lifting The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to a 60-57 win over the Rattlers.

Acosta's three broke a three minute and 44 second scoring drought as the Falcons led 57-52 with 3:47 to play.  Four-straight misses and two turnovers later, the Rattlers tied the game at 57 with 1:16 to go after DeAnna Patterson hit a jumper for two of her 12 points on the evening.

For the second-straight game, UTPB struggled from behind the three-point line, hitting 4-of-15 from long range.  The Falcons also struggled from the free throw line, hitting 6-of-13 from the charity stripe, but relied on balanced scoring as four scored in double-figures.  Taniqua Ards and Teisha King each had 12, while Acosta and Jessi Cowden added 10 apiece.

The Falcons led for the first 9:30 of the game until Felicia Jacobs gave the Rattlers their first lead of the game after making a layup, giving them a 13-11 lead they would hold the rest of the half.  St. Mary's would eventually take a 30-27 lead into halftime.

UTPB would finally take back the lead when King hit a pair of free throws with 10:45 to play, giving the Falcons 43-42 advantage.  The Falcons kept the lead until Patterson's jumper tied the game with just over a minute to play.

The Rattlers made just nine field goals in the second half, but made 14 of the 16 free throws they attempted to keep the game close.

The win pushed the Falcons' record to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in Heartland Conference play.  They will head to Laredo to face Texas A&M International at noon on Saturday.
