box score

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman's Alina Voronenko made a layup with nine seconds left which eventually led Newman to a 69-67 win over the UTPB women's basketball team.  The Jets have clinched at least a share of the Heartland Conference regular season title for the second-straight season.

Voronenko's layup broke a 67-67 tie, erasing a 66-60 Falcon lead with 3:59 to play.  Teisha King's free throw with 1:23 to go would be the only point UTPB would score in nearly four minutes of action.  The Falcons missed four shots and one free throw and committed a turnover in their final possession game during the drought.

The Jets rode the back of Santoria Bell, who led all scorers with 32 points as well as Tasha Cannon's 10.  Tammy Acosta kept the Falcons close with 17 points, five of which came from the free throw line, while King ended with 11.

Newman led all but 25 seconds in the first half, including an 11-point advantage on three different occasions.  The Falcons fought back, using a 16-6 run in the final 7:03 of the first.  The Jets would eventually take a 39-38 halftime lead.

A three-pointer by Lauren Unger with 13:09 left gave the Falcons a 48-47 lead and the teams would exchange buckets until an 11-3 run by UTPB gave it a 66-59 lead, the largest of the game.  Newman would return the favor as Voronenko hit the front end of a pair of free throws to start a 10-1 run, including her game-winning layup.

The Falcons have secured a spot in the upcoming Heartland Conference Tournament that will be held in Wichita, Kan. if Newman wins its remaining conference matchup.  UTPB will host St. Edward's next Saturday in the regular-season finale in the Falcon Dome.
