The University of Texas of the Permian Basin volleyball team picked up its fourth straight victory Thursday night, needing extra points in the first two sets to win 26-24 before a dominating 25-18 win in the third and final set to wrap up the victory against St. Mary's in San Antonio, Texas.
UTPB responded after falling behind 3-0 in the first set, using five straight attack errors by St. Mary's to take a 10-6 lead. Three straight Falcon kills from
Hannah Rebb,
Melissa Lusk and
Terra Peil later in the set increased the advantage to 16-8, but St. Mary's put together its own run to come to within a points at 16-15. The Falcons were able to lead by three two different times towards the end of the set but found themselves facing set points trailing 23-24. However, three more consecutive kills from
Keeley Brogdon,
Ryley Carman and
Jamie Rodell brought UTPB back to take the opener by two.
Set two saw both teams stay closer together, with neither able to separate very far aside from the Rattlers holdind a three point lead twice early on. UTPB pulled ahead by three on a service ace by Kelsey Zuckowski at 20-17, but dropped three straight to deadlock the second set at 20-20. Four out of the next five points went the Falcons way, giving them set point at 24-21, but St. Mary's fought back with a pair of kills and an attack error to knot the set again at 24-24. Lusk and Peil gave the Falcons their second straight 26-24 set victory, recording back-to-back kills to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
UTPB ran away early in the third, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. The Falcons never trailed by fewer than five in the rest of the set, leading by as many as eight four different times in a dominant third set victory that saw UT-Permian Basin record 16 kills while committing zero errors, hitting .485 to score the straight sets win.
Brogdon led UTPB with 11 kills on the night, holding a team best .346 hitting percentage. The Falcons racked up a season-high 16 total blocks in the win, including nine block assists from Rodell, the second-best individual efffort on the season.
UTPB stays on the road this weekend, traveling to Texas A&M International for a noon match Saturday in Laredo, Texas.
