LAREDO – Miranda Pratt put down 22 kills with just three errors to lead Texas A&M International to a 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12) win over The University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Not only did Pratt play a near flawless game offensively, She had Alex Ciszek and Jacquelynne Matula combine for 27 more kills as the Dustdevils rattled off 70 kills in the five-set match.
UTPB is now 1-3 in five-set contests.
Not only did A&M International pick up 13 more kills than the Falcons, it hit .223 while UTPB hit .155. Three players finished with at least 10 kills with
Melissa Lusk leading the way with 18, which tied a career-high, while
Alex Genung and
Heather Sanchez had 12 and 10 respectively.
In the first set, the Falcons took a brief 3-1 lead after back-to-back attack errors by Andrea Marshall and Pratt. The teams would exchange points until a 4-0 run by UTPB gave it a 16-12 advantage thanks to another Dustdevil attack error. The Falcons were haunted by hitting errors as back-to-back offensive miscues allowed the Dustdevils to not only tie the match at 17, but to take an 18-17 lead which they would not lose the rest of the set. UTPB did tie the set at 18 on a service error, but a 7-1 run the rest of the way closed out the set and gave the Dustdevils a 1-0 advantage.
The second set was much like the first, but with the roles reversed as A&M International taking a lead for most of the begging of the set. An attack error by UTPB gave the Dustdevils a 10-7 lead, but a 6-2 run by the Falcons gave them a 13-12 advantage after a kill by Sanchez. She was one of three players with three kills in the set for the Falcons.
The teams went back and fourth, until a service ace by Jennifer Vega gave A&M International a 21-20 lead, but a service error by Vega on the next possession tied the set at 21.
Terra Peil picked up one of her three kills in match to put the Falcons on top for good. An attack error by Matula gave the Falcons a 25-22 win and tied the match at one set each.
The Falcons led 8-5 to open the third set, but A&M International would battle back to eventually tie the set at 10 on a UTPB attack error. A service ace by Daria Winckler gave the Dustdevils an 11-10 lead they would not relinquish. Pratt picked up seven of the team's 15 kills in the set and had just one error in 13 attempts.
UTPB never trailed in the fourth set as Lusk and Genung each had five kills in the set. The Falcons hit .282, its best offensive set in the match, committed just three errors in 39 attempts while putting down 14 kills.
In the fifth and deciding set, A&M International jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back as it improved to 3-1 in Heartland Conference play. The Falcons pulled within two (14-12) after back-to-back hitting errors by the Dustdevils, but fittingly, Pratt ended the match with her 22
nd kill of the contest.
The Falcons fell to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in Heartland Conference play. They will step out of league play as they head to Hobbs, N.M. to take on the University of the Southwest on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
