AUSTIN – James Martin converted a penalty kick at the 95
th minute to lift St. Edward's to a 4-3 overtime win over The University of Texas of the Permian Basin in the Heartland Conference opener.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 2-0 lead when JR Ellis scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart. His first score came at the 18:23 mark when he took a throw in from Matt McLaughlin and beat
Craig Branum on a one-on-one. His second goal came at 19:10 when Daniel Pena passed a low cross into the penalty box where Ellis found the back of the net.
Freshman
Tyler Pate put the Falcons on the board with his first goal of the year at the 35:35 mark after receiving a through pass from
German Chavarria then beating goal keeper John Kaschak to cut the lead in half.
St. Edward's took a 2-1 advantage into the half and added to its lead 48 seconds into the second half when Roberto Olivieri tapped in a cross from Sam Burns making it 3-1.
Dylan Slaughter kept the match close when his header found the back of the net after Chavarria picked up his second assist on the night on a corner kick.
The momentum continued for the Falcons when
Shelby Sharp tied the contest with his second goal of the season after making a penalty kick at the 61
st minute.
UTPB took 17 shots, eight of which were on goal.
Tyler Gibson had a team-high five shots, while Sharp had four. The Hilltoppers took 19 shots on the day with seven being on goal. Branum had three saves in goal for the Falcons as UTPB fell to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in league play. St. Edward's improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Heartland play.
The Falcons will remain on the road when they head to San Antonio to take on Incarnate Word at 1 p.m.
