Tyler Gibson scored a pair of goals in the first half leading The University of Texas of the Permian Basin to a 2-0 victory in the final game of the 2011 season.
The Temple, Texas native not only led the team with nine goals on the season, but led the entire Heartland Conference as well. He wasted little time in putting the Falcons on the board as a shot by
Logan Sharp ricocheted off St. Edward's goal keeper John Kaschak where Gibson was there to rifle it in just 38 seconds into the match. Sharp and Gibson combined for seven of the Falcons' 16 shots.
He would strike again just before the half as he took a through pass from
David Huxen when he one-timed in the lower left corner of the net, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the 42
nd minute.
The trio of
Chris Benavides,
Craig Branum and
Blake Hardin combined for five saves as the Falcons picked up their fourth shutout of the season. Benavides, who played the entire first half, blocked three shots, while Branum and Hardin split time in the second with Branum tallying two saves in the win.
UTPB finished the season with a 4-13 overall and 3-5 Heartland Conference record and will be returning everyone from this year's team next season as the Falcons didn't have a senior on the roster.
