The University of Texas of the Permian Basin scored 45 second half points and out-rebounded Western New Mexico 48-28 as the Falcons cruised to a 74-46 victory.
Taniqua Ards picked up her first double-double in a Falcon uniform with 13 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 6-of-7 from the field and dishing out three assists.
Teisha King led the way for UTPB with 17 points while
Lauren Unger had nine, all of which came in the first five minutes of the game. All 13 players saw action and all but two scored as the Falcons improved to 6-2 on the year.
The teams were tied at 14 with 11:23 to go before halftime, but a 10-0 run over the next six minutes gave the Falcons a commanding 24-14 lead and never looked back. They went into the locker room at the break with a 29-18 advantage.
UTPB poured it on in the second as it opened with a 10-1 run to lead 39-19 after Ards converted a layup with 16:51 to go.
Clarissa Davis put in her only bucket of the game with 2:07 left, giving UTPB a 72-40 advantage, its largest of the game.
The Falcons scored 34 points in the paint and took advantage of the 21 Mustang turnovers as it resulted in 30 more points for UTPB. They also scored 23 second-chance points.
UTPB will hit the road this weekend to play in the Henderson State Classic where it will face Ouachita Baptist on Friday at 5 p.m. and Henderson State at 3 p.m. The Falcons will return home on Dec. 14 to host the University of the Southwest at 7 p.m. in the Falcon Dome.
