ALPINE – Bralyn Thomas' jumper found the bottom of the net as time expired to lift Sul Ross State over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin 69-68. Thomas, who finished with 10 points, was one of four players in double figures for the Lobos.
Before Thomas' heroics, Ke'Andre Derrick gave the Falcons a 68-67 lead with 13 seconds to play after a steal by Louis Crane. UTPB trailed 67-62 with just over two minutes to play, but a 6-0 run down the stretch gave the Falcons the lead for the first time since the 12-minute mark.
Both teams had the hot hand as the Falcons hit nearly 51 percent from the field, but the Lobos countered with a 55 percent shooting performance for their first win of the season.
Erik Martin poured in a season-high 21 points, hitting 7-of-12 from the field and drained three of the team's four three-pointers. Derrick and Klein Harper added 10 points each and were the only other players to hit double-figures.
UTPB opened the first half with a 17-8 lead, its largest of the game, but Sul Ross managed to tie the game at 23 with 6:20 to go after Jeremy Hammond scored two of his 11 points with a 12-foot jumper. Except for a 6-5 advantage by the Lobos in the early going, the Falcons led the entire first half. They would go into the locker room with a 38-35 lead, despite a 64 percent shooting performance by the Lobos.
The Falcons held on to their lead up until the 12-minute mark when Thomas tied that game at 50 after hitting a 15-footer from the right side. Trevor Doyle would later give the Lobos a two-point lead with 10:48 to go.
Both teams exchanged buckets until Derrick finally gave the Falcons the lead in the closing seconds. Sul Ross' Jimmy Martinez missed a jumper with four seconds to go, but an offensive rebound by Weldon gave the Lobos a second-chance point, their 10th of the game.
The loss put the Falcons at 1-3 on the year and will remain on the road when they compete in the Mesa State Classic in Mesa, Ariz. on Friday and Saturday. UTPB will take on Mesa State on Friday and Western Oregon the following day.
