No. 20 Abilene Christian tallied nearly double the amount of kills and made less errors than the Falcons as the Wildcats took a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-14) win over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
ACU recorded 47 kills and had just 17 errors in 116 total attacks for a .259 hitting percentage, while the Falcons finished with 24 kills with 20 errors in 119 attacks for an attack percentage of .034. Keeley Bogdon led the way with six kills for UTPB, but Melissa Lusk was the most efficient with five kills and just two errors.
The Wildcats' Jennie Hutt had a match-high 12 kills with just three errors while Neely Borger had seven kills without a mistake.
The Falcons hung tough in the first set as they matched the Wildcats point-for-point. UTPB led on several different occasions, including 10-8 and 14-12, but a 5-0 run by ACU gave it a 17-14 lead which they would not lose the rest of the way. The Wildcats would eventually lead 24-20, but three-straight Falcon points kept the set close after a kill by Alex Genung. Hutt would collect one of her five kills in the set on game point, giving the Wildcats an early 1-0 match lead.
The second set started much like the first with the teams tied at 10 after an ACU attack error, but a 13-3 run by the Wildcats all but silenced the Falcon offense.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set and never looked back as they hit .250 for the set and took advantage of just three kills and nine errors by UTPB.
UTPB fell to 9-17 on the year, while ACU won their seventh-straight and sit at 20-3 for the season. The Falcons will be back in action on Thursday when they host St. Edward's at 7 p.m.
