Tim Loesch enters his eighth season in charge of the UT Permian Basin volleyball program.
The Falcons made their deepest Lone Star Conference postseason run in 2021 and put the entire conference on notice with two massive upsets late in the season. The Falcons won 17 games, the second most under Loesch, and reached the LSC semifinals for the first time since joining the conference. In the LSC quarterfinals the Falcons knocked off two-time defending conference champion and No. 6 nationally-ranked Angelo State on their home floor. The Falcons handed the Rams just their fifth loss at home in their last 100 games. Less than a week prior on Senior Day, the Falcons stunned No. 13 UT Tyler after trailing by two sets.
The Falcons got huge performances from their upperclassmen. Analise Lucio finished the season with 938 assists, third most in the conference, to end her Falcon career second all-time in the category. Offensively the team was led by Aquincia Strambler's 369 kills, second most in the LSC, while Taurie Magee added 247 and Isela Murillo 244. Defensively the Falcons were fourth in the conference in team digs and held opponent's to the fifth lowest hitting percentage. Daylee Doggett had a breakout year with 483 digs to finish third in the conference. After the season Lucio and Strambler were awarded with First Team All-Conference honors.
Things were different for the Falcons as the 2020 season was moved to the spring due to the COVID pandemic. Playing one of the most difficult schedules in the country, the Falcons continued to build momentum off their 20-win 2019 campaign. Needing two wins to close the season and make the Lone Star Conference playoffs, the Falcons swept Lubbock Christian on the road for their third straight playoff appearance. In the playoffs the Falcons were the only lower seed in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, the Falcons took top-seeded UA Fort Smith down to the wire before falling in a five-set thriller. The Falcons were the only lower seed in the quarterfinals to take a set from the higher seed. Lucio and Strambler had monster seasons and both were named to the All-Conference Team after the season.
The 2019 season was a historic one for Falcon Volleyball. The Falcons won 20 games in a season for the first time since 2008 and won a Lone Star Conference Playoff game for the first time in program history. The .690 winning percentage is the highest in program history and the Falcons placed 10th in the first South Central Regional poll of the year. The team's offense was tremendous setting a new program hitting percentage Travana Matthews had a monster season, setting the single season hitting percentage record and was named to the All-Conference First Team. During the season Loesch reached a personal milestone, picking up his 200th career win as a coach.
The Falcons made a huge jump in 2018 as they won 10 more games than the previous season, the largest increase in victories in program history. The 14 wins were the most under Loesch since taking over the program in 2015. With a 9-11 record in the Lone Star Conference, the Falcons played postseason volleyball for the first time since 2011, making the LSC Championships as the seventh seed. The Falcons finished the 2018 season strong, upsetting regionally-ranked Angelo State in four sets, before handing No. 10 Tarleton their only conference loss of the season on Senior Day in five sets. Junior Skyler Friel set the school record for hitting percentage and was named to the Lone Star Conference All-Conference First Team, the Falcons first All-Conference selection since 2013. Junior Matthews was an All-Conference Honorable Mention after the season.
Prior to UTPB, Loesch had spent three seasons as the head coach of indoor and beach volleyball at Division I Stetson University. He helped the university launch their beach volleyball program in 2012 and in 2013 led the Hatters to their first postseason appearance since 1995. Loesch served as the head coach at Limestone College where in seven seasons he won a regular season conference title along with three conference tournament runner-up finishes. His last six years at the helm Loesch went 116-90 overall and 77-39 in conference, prior to his arrival they had gone 17-158 as a program. In 2006, Loesch was named Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year. Loesch has had numerous stops elsewhere including head coach at Butler High School where he earned two state-playoff appearances and 10 years of Junior Olympic Club Volleyball earning multiple bids to the national championships.
