Since joining UT Permian Basin in 2013 Andy Newman has becoming the winningest head coach in school history with a 99-49 record. Before hiring Newman, UTPB had only two winning seasons since the program joined NCAA Division II starting with the 2006-07 season. Since then they have a posted winning record every year since. This includes the school winning its first conference championship in basketball during the 2016-17 season and making its first appearance in the NCAA National Tournament. Under coach Newman UTPB has 21 games scoring 100 or more points out of the 25 in the school’s history. His teams have the five highest season totals for points scored and have the 10 highest scoring games in school history.
In his first season in 2013-14, Newman’s offense shattered the UTPB record for points in a season with 2,309 and led them to a then school-record 17 victories. Newman piloted the Falcons to the Heartland Conference Championship game as the fourth seed. The Falcons would fall in a close 76-72 game to Texas A&M – International. The season finished with Dwayne Soders being named to the Heartland Conference All-Conference First Team and Phadarius Taylor being named an honorable mention.
The 2014-15 season saw Newman win 17 games for the second consecutive season and setting a new record for points scored with 2,470. UTPB outscored their opponents by 206 points, a then school-record. Early in the season the school scored 119 points in a single game breaking the previous record of 111 set in the 2013-14 season. The 53-point margin of victory over Southwestern Adventist is the third largest in school history. During the 2014-15 season Madison Turner became the first player in school history to score 1,000 career points finishing as the school’s all-time leading scorer.
UTPB finished the 2015-16 season with a 15-14 record. The season saw newcomer Johnnie Lacy become the first Falcon to finish a single-season with at least 500 points, finishing with 531. Lacy would be named to the Heartland Conference All-Conference Second-Team.
Newman took UTPB to new heights in 2016-17 as the school transitioned into the Lone Star Conference. The additions of Daeshon Francis, Sammy Allen, James McPherson and Josh Morris to Lacy propelled the Falcons to a regular season conference championship, the first in school history. The team would sweep through the conference tournament taking their first conference championship in men’s basketball and their first appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The Falcons would set a school record 26 victories, the first 20-win season in school history. Newman’s Falcons would average 88.3 points per game and outscored opponents by a school-record 363 points. The team would shatter single-season school records with Francis setting the record for points, Allen the record for rebounds, McPherson three-pointers, Morris field goal percentage and Johnnie Lacy the record for assists. Francis would be named Lone Star Conference and South Central Region Player of the Year as well as making the First-Team All-Conference. Newman would be named Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year.
Fueled by a first round upset in the NCAA Tournament, Newman returned a senior heavy team in 2017-18. Here the Falcons would set a school record reaching #6 in the coach’s rankings and an 11-game winning streak. The team would finish the season 15-0 at home and a 27-1 record over two seasons. The team would set the school-record with 125 points in a double overtime victory over Adams State. During the season Sammy Allen became the first player in school history to record a triple-double only to be followed a few weeks later by teammate Daeshon Francis. The team would finish second in the Lone Star Conference with a 14-4 record and make the Lone Star Conference Championship Game, falling 80-76 to West Texas A&M. Francis was once again named Conference Player of the Year and Allen named Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Francis and Josh Morris were named to the All-Conference First Team, Allen All-Conference Second and All-Defensive Teams and James McPherson to the All-Conference Third Team.
Before coming to UTPB ociate head coach. He helped the Titans lead the Big West Conference in scoring in eight of his 10 seasons, including a conference-best 81.8 points per game in 2008 when they were Big West league and tournament champions and earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.Newman spent 10 seasons at Cal State-Fullerton, including a stint as the team's interim head coach after nine years as an assistant, five of them as ass
Prior to arriving in Orange County, Newman served as the Basketball Operations Coordinator for a season at Fresno State. The 2002-03 Western Athletic Conference champions, he gave individual instruction to guard and post players, assisted in recruiting and scheduling and broke down film.
He started his coaching career as an assistant at Vanguard University for one season before serving in the same capacity for two seasons at West Valley Community College where he started his collegiate playing career.
A 1998 graduate of Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. with a degree in business finance, he helped the Cougars win 30-plus games with a trip to the NAIA Final Four in 1998. Prior to his one season at Azusa Pacific, he spent a year at Southern Utah University where he led the Thunderbirds in minutes and assists. He earned his master's in coaching and athletic administration degree from Concordia University.
