How He Got To UTPB:
He started the 2025 campaign without any offers. Several months later, DeSoto QB Legend Howell saw his Signing Day dream come true when he signed with UT Permian Basin. Howell, who helped guide DeSoto to its fourth state championship, signed with UT-Permian Basin on National Signing Day. Howell, DeSoto's starting quarterback in 2025, confirmed on the first day of practice back in August that he had no college offers entering his senior year. But he knew his fate would change and that he would make his mark in Texas high school football. That's exactly what happened. Howell led DeSoto to the 6A Division II state title, the school's fourth overall and third since 2022, and signed with UT-Permian Basin on National Signing Day. "It showed that whatever I put my mind to, I can get it done," Howell said. Howell finished with 2,896 passing yards and 34 touchdown passes. After throwing three interceptions in the first game of the season, he did not throw a pick again all season. The senior played a fantastic game in DeSoto's 57-44 upset win over nationally ranked Southlake Carroll in the 6A Division II state semifinals, finishing 20-of-27 passing for 344 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 49 yards and a score. Howell was 19-of-25 for 280 yards and four scores in DeSoto's 55-27 win over Houston C.E. King in the 6A Division II state championship game. DeSoto coach Claude Mathis said before the season that he knew Howell could perform at a high level. "I think a lot of guys are sleeping on him. They don't really know about Legend, but they are about to," Mathis said on the first day of practice. "He is a very smart kid, he has a strong arm, he knows what to do with the football and he knows the offense in and out. His IQ is off the chart. This year it's his time, his moment."
DeSoto High School:
Was TAPPS Newcomer of the Year at DeSoto High School... Senior year he was First-Team All-District and Team Captain, and led his team to a State Championship... Team was also two-time District Champs... In a commendable achievement, DeSoto quarterback Legend Howell received a scholarship from @AmericanRivalry for boasting the highest GPA on his team, with an impressive 4.4 GPA. Recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in the area, Howell emphasizes the importance of academics, showcasing his commitment as a true student-athlete.
Bishop Lynch High School:
Sources confirmed the 2026 QB Legend Howell is set to play for the DeSoto Eagles in 2024. Howell, who lives in the DeSoto school district, played the last two seasons in the private school ranks at Bishop Lynch... HONORS AND AWARDS: TAPPS 6A-District 1 Honorable Mention All-District (2023)... SOPHOMORE YEAR (2023): The sophomore's second season at the helm of the Friars offense saw great improvement. Howell finished the year with career highs in passing yards (2,445), passing touchdowns (18), rushing yards (352) and rushing touchdowns (2). He threw for over 300 yards this season in three games: Celina (305), Prestonwood (305), and Nolan Catholic (304)... Went 174-288 (60.4%) with 2,445 yards and 18 touchdowns with 8 interceptions... Rushed 87 times for 398 yards and 2 touchdowns... Season high 305 passing yards against Celina (9.1) and Prestonwood Christian (10.20)... Season high 6 touchdown passes against Nolan Catholic (10/28)... Season high 108 rushing yards against Nolan Catholic (10/28)... Legen Howell has had many big games for the Friars in his young career, but none were bigger than his performance on Saturday afternoon to help Bishop Lynch defeat Nolan Catholic 59-21. Howell's stat line is something you see in video games- 412 total yards with seven touchdowns. Yes, the sophomore accounted for seven total touchdowns on Saturday. He completed 21-27 passes for 304 yards and six touchdowns while running for 108 on eight carries for one touchdown... FRESHMAN YEAR (2022): Went 135-197 (69%) for 1,516 yards and 11 touchdowns with 6 interceptions... Rushed for 92 yards and 1 touchdown... Season high 241 yards passing against Nolan Catholic (10/29)... Season high 3 touchdown passes against Nolan Catholic (10/3).
