Jake Shaw was named Defensive Coordinator / Inside Linebackers Coach at The University of Texas Permian Basin in December of 2023.
In Shaw's second season at UTPB (2025), the Falcon's made the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the second time in program history and advanced to the Super Region Final (NCAA Quarterfinals) for the first time in program history. UTPB finished the season 11-3 overall, setting a program record for wins in a single season while also earning the first two playoff wins in program history, and was in a three-team tie for second in the Lone Star Conference with a 7-2 record. Under Shaw's coaching, junior linebacker Tristan Exline was named a Second-Team AFCA All-American, becoming just the second AFCA All-American in UTPB history and the first since 2019. Throughout the season, Exline was also named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year (J.V. Sikes Award), was the LSC Linebacker of the Year for the second year in a row, was a two-time LSC Defensive Player of the Week and a two-time D2Football.com National Defensive Player of the Week, and was the third Falcon in program history to be named First-Team D2CCA All-Super Region Four Team. He was the first LSC Defensive Player of the Year in program history and was just the second Falcon to be named a two-time LSC Linebacker of the Year. Exline was also named as one of 36 initial nominees for the 2025 Harlon Hill Trophy (Division II College Football Player of the Year), becoming the fourth Falcon  to be nominated for the award. It was later announced that Exline finished in the top-six in regional voting from Super Region Four and was listed as an official "Harlon Hill Candidate", becoming just the second player in program history to reach that stage in the voting. With a tackle for loss in the Falcons' second-round playoff win at Western Colorado (Nov. 29), Exline broke the UTPB record for tackles for loss in a single season (19.5). He also broke the Falcons' single-season record for solo tackles (80). As a team in 2025, UTPB ranked third in DII and first in the LSC in passing defense (151.5 yards per game), ranked 20th in DII and first in the LSC in total defense (304.1 yards per game), ranked fifth in DII and first in the LSC in team passing efficiency defense (99.49 efficiency), and ranked 21st in DII and second in the LSC in scoring defense (19.1 points per game).
Prior to UTPB, Shaw was the Defensive Coordinator / Inside Linebackers Coach at East Central University (DII) in Ada, Oklahoma. During the 2023 season, he coached four all-conference players (Devon Roush, Darian Williams, Jimmy Pitts, and Gio Waller). He spent five years with the program.
During the 2022 season, Shaw was named the Special Teams Coordinator for the Tigers. Shaw helped lead the Tigers to a Heritage Bowl Championship and a 9-3 season. Shaw also helped coach All-American Devon Roush who also earned first-team all-conference in the Great American Conference (GAC) and was the GAC Defensive Player of the Year.Â
During the 2021 season, Shaw led RJ Williams to earn second-team all-conference honors.
In 2020, he was promoted to full-time Inside Linebackers Coach while also gaining the title of the Camp Director.
In 2019, Shaw joined the East Central football staff as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Inside Linebackers. During that season, Shaw led Basiru Jobe to an honorable mention all-conference recognition.
Prior to East Central University, Shaw spent the 2018 season at the University of Wisconsin-Stout as the Outside Linebackers Coach. Prior to, he spent three seasons at Verona Area High School (Verona, Wis.) as an assistant coach.
The Hudson, Wisconsin, native graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2018 with a Bachelors in Psychology and History. In the Fall of 2020, Shaw graduated with a Master’s in Sports Administration from East Central University.
Shaw currently lives in Odessa, Texas, with his wife (Michelle) and son (Mickey).
