Cody Gray enters his second season as the assistant defensive line coach at UT Permian Basin . The defense was the story as the Falcons finished the spring of 2021 undefeated. The Falcons shut down opposing offenses, allowing just 12.6 points per game and over the final three games went nearly 10 full quarters without giving up a score. The defense shutout Texas A&M - Kingsville in week four, with the only points scored by the Javelinas coming off a safety. The defensive line was a force recording 13 sacks and only allowed 2.6 yards per game on the ground. Up front Dominque Varela led the way with 4.5 sacks while freshman Victor Idusuyi added 2.5.
Gray came to UTPB after serving two years at his alma mater, the University of Richmond, where he was the offensive quality control and assistant defensive line coach. Gray also spent time working as the offensive quality coach, while working with the offensive line.
Gray began his career as a student assistant at Richmond, where he worked with the Spider defensive line which ranked No. 1 in the Colonial Athletic Association in pass defense, No. 2 in the CAA in sacks, and No. 4 in CAA in total defense, along with producing two All-Conference players, one preseason CAA Defensive Player of the Year and a sophomore All-American.
Gray was a three-year letterman defensive lineman for the Spiders before transitioning to a coaching role.
