Brandon Burton enters his third season as defensive backs and defensive passing game coordinator at UT Permian Basin. Burton joined the Falcons after most recently coaching the defensive backs for the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football League.

The Falcon secondary was lights out in the spring of 2021.  The unit allowed just 159.2 yards per game and five touchdowns on the season.  In only five games the secondary intercepted 12 passes to set a program record.  The Falcons had a player with two interceptions in a game in the first three games of the season, after not accomplishing the feat through the program’s four-year existence.  D’Ondre Robinson set the program record with four interceptions in a season, returning one for a touchdown.

In 2019, Burton’s secondary helped the Falcons force a program-record 24 turnovers including 11 interceptions, with four returned for a touchdown. Freshman defensive back Donta Stuart had three interceptions and was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention.

Burton redshirted and played three seasons at Utah from 2006-2010. An All-Mountain West Cornerback in 2010, he entered the 2011 NFL Draft after his junior season and was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round. A five-year NFL player, he spent two years with the Vikings, two with the Buffalo Bills and played his final season with the Indianapolis Colts.

He returned to Utah, helping to coach the Utes as a student assistant in 2016 before taking on a graduate assistant role for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Burton graduated with his bachelor’s in economics from Utah in 2016.
