Jerry Burleson (Coach B) began as an Assistant Baseball Coach at UT Permian Basin for the 2025 season. Burleson, who worked in the oil and gas business, has also coached and worked with kids for over 35 years.
Coach Burleson has coached and assisted with number high school and collegiate summer programs over the years. Burleson started his professional coaching career in 2003 at Midland Christian School coaching both football and baseball. He served as the Head Baseball Coach at Midland Christian in 2023 with a record of 16-5. He officially retired at the end of the 2023 season.
Burleson has had the good fortune of working with various Major League Baseball draft picks while they were in high school, including:
- Chris Withrow - First round MLB in 2007 - Los Angeles Dodgers
- Carson Smith - Eighth round MLB 2011 - Seattle Mariners
- Reid Redman - 23rd round MLB 2012 - Tampa Bay Rays
- Hunter Redman - Eighth round MLB 2014 - Los Angeles Dodgers
"I have loved every minute of my life working with kids and learning the game of baseball," said Burleson. "I'm really nobody special, just lots of good memories working with kids."
Burleson was a two-sport athlete at Odessa Permian High School, lettering in both football and baseball, and was a member of the Texas Tech University football team from 1985-1987. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Texas Tech.
Coach Burleson and his wife, Gayle, have been married for 36 years and had two boys, Cory and Bryant, who were both blessed with the opportunity to play NCAA Division I baseball. From 2003-2011, Midland Christian was a big part of Jerry Burleson’s life as his sons, Cory and Bryant, were both standout athletes for the Mustangs, and both went on to play college baseball. Cory, a catcher, played at the University of Nebraska, while Bryant, an infielder, played at Texas Tech and was part of the school’s first College World Series team in 2014.
A native of Odessa, Texas, Burleson retired to Horseshoe Bay, Texas, in 2023, but is back living in the Permian Basin while coaching at UTPB.
His hobbies include playing golf, running, and working with his wife at their church.
