Baseball swept by No. 18 UT Tyler

TYLER, Texas (March 29, 2026) – The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team was defeated in game four of its series at No. 18 The University of Texas at Tyler, being held to one hit and two walks while falling 10-0 in eight innings.

For the first time in the series, UT Tyler scored first as Kaston Mason tripled home Brock Bearden with two outs in the bottom of the first.

After a leadoff single by Daylon Jefcoats and a walk by Gael Bernal to put two Falcons on base with no outs in the top of the first, UTPB grounded into its fourth double-play ball of the series, including the third time by Carlos Chavez.

Starting pitcher Matthew Mackenzie (1-0) and relief pitcher Colsten Abel would combine to set down each of the next 16 Falcons after the double play, tossing five straight 1-2-3 innings (2nd-6th).

UT Tyler scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, and then in the bottom of the fifth, a two-out rally featuring a walk, an error and another walk loaded the bases before a two-run single to center field to make the score 4-0.

Timmy LaChappa (1-5) exited after five innings pitched allowing four hits, four total runs, two earned runs, six walks and four strikeouts. The 4-0 deficit when LaChappa left was not insurmountable, however, the bullpen would be unable to keep UTPB in the game.

A leadoff walk by Bernal, his second of the game, finally ended the stretch of perfect innings by the Patriots' pitching staff in the top of the seventh. Bernal hit .556 (5-for-9) for the series, increasing his team-leading batting average to.405, and added four walks to increase his team-leading on-base percentage to .468.

An unusual play occurred in the bottom of the seventh when a bunt single to the catcher created a throwing error that allowed the batter to come all the way around and score himself.

Then a run on a wild pitch ended the game in the bottom of the eighth.

The hit to leadoff the game by Jefcoats would end up being UTPB's only hit of the game. It was a combined one-hit shutout for the Patriots' pitching staff (4 pitchers).

The Falcons combined for more errors (10) over the last two games than they had hits (5) as the Patriots capitalized on UTPB's miscues throughout the series.

UTPB falls to 8-26 both overall and in the Lone Star Conference with nine straight losses, and has failed to score more than three runs during its last seven games. UT Tyler improves to 26-8 with its seventh straight win.

Next up, the Falcons will begin their fifth Lone Star Conference series at home this season, marking their first home game since March 14. The Falcons will battle Sul Ross State University beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, from Odessa, Texas.
