Softball struggles to hit at No. 12 Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND, Okla. (March 13, 2026) – Facing one of the top teams in Division II on Friday, UT Permian Basin softball was no-hit in an 8-0 defeat in six innings in game one, and was held hitless until the seventh inning in a 7-0 loss in game two at No. 12 nationally-ranked Oklahoma Christian University.

Game 1 (UTPB 0, OC 8):
  • Amathyst Gonzalez was UTPB's lone baserunner in the game after a hit by pitch to lead off the fifth inning. However, she would be caught stealing to end the inning as the Lone Star Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Jill Dickson (10-2), faced the minimum 18 batters in the six-inning contest.
  • Dickson retired each of the first 12 batters of the game, doing so on 10 strikeouts, including back-to-back three-strikeout innings in the second and third innings.
  • Dickson's fifth-career no-hitter was one hit batter away from her first career perfect game while she matched her career high with 12 punch-outs.
  • Offensively for OC, an inside-the-park home run by leadoff hitter Maci George in the bottom of the first was really all the offense the Eagles needed.
  • OC would score at least one run in every inning but the third inning.
  • Leading 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles would need back-to-back two-out RBI-singles to reach the run-rule.
  • It was the Falcons' first time being no-hit this season after being held hitless three times last season, including in game two at Oklahoma Christian last year.

Game 2 (UTPB 0, OC 7):
  • Each of UTPB's first five batters stuck out before a hit by pitch with two outs by Gabriella Cabrera in the second inning.
  • OC's Ella Resendiz (7-0) struck out eight of the first 10 UTPB batters she faced and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of game two.
  • After four straight 1-2-3 innings going into the seventh, it was again Gonzalez who drew a hit by pitch for UTPB, her second hit by pitch of the day.
  • That was followed by back-to-back singles by Carlee Quintero and Angelina Arriaga, loading the bases for UTPB before the final three outs by Resendiz.
  • Resendiz allowed two hits, no walks and struck out 10 in the shutout win.
  • Making just her second start of the season, UTPB's Presley Crawford (0-1) kept OC off the scoreboard in the first inning and limited the Eagles to just one run in the first four innings.
  • In the second inning, a leadoff walk and a one-out walk were followed by an RBI-single to center field for OC. Then with the bases loaded and still just one out, Crawford got out of the inning with a groundball to shortstop and a force out at home plate followed by a flyout to center field.
  • Crawford proceeded to work around a leadoff single in the third inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.
  • In the fifth inning, however, a leadoff single this time came back to bite Crawford as the Eagles scored three runs on three hits in the inning, which also included two errors by the Falcons' defense.
  • Crawford would finish with 4.1 innings pitched allowing seven hits, four runs and three walks, a respectable performance for the freshman against a top-12 team in the country.

Team Records:
  • UTPB falls to 9-14 overall and 2-12 in the LSC while No. 12 Oklahoma Christian improves to 22-4 and 14-2. The Eagles have now started a new win streak after having their 10-game winning streak, their longest win streak since 2022, snapped in a game-two loss at Texas A&M University-Kingsville last Sunday.
  • UTPB has not defeated Oklahoma Christian since February 11, 2017 (13 straight games), and has won only one of its last 24 games vs. the Eagles.
  • The Eagles end their 2025 season with a 38-21 overall record, marking their fifth season with at least 38 victories in the last six campaigns (excluding shortened 2020 season).
  • After coming in at No. 25 in the 2026 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Preseason Poll, Oklahoma Christian was selected to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference. In addition to the Eagles' preseason bid, senior pitcher Jill Dickson was recognized as the conference's Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
  • The Oklahoma Christian softball team spent a 264-day offseason preparing to make its biggest regular-season statement of the NCAA Division II era, defeating NFCA Preseason No. 2 and defending national runner-up Tampa on the road during its season opener, 2-0 and 4-2. The pair of victories mark OC's first-ever win over an NFCA No. 1 or No. 2 team in the regular season since joining the NCAA in 2013.
  • After winning 10 of its last 11 games, Oklahoma Christian moves from No. 13 to No. 12 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top-25 Division II Poll. At 20-4 overall in 2026, OC has matched its best 24-game start since making the transition to NCAA in 2013.

Coach's Quote:
  • UTPB Head Softball Coach David Martinez said, "We could not get anything going today. We look to rebound tomorrow against Cameron."

Next Up: UTPB will finish off its road trip to Oklahoma by playing at Cameron University, starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 14.
