LAWTON, Okla. (March 14, 2026) – The University of Texas Permian Basin softball team lost its final two games of its weekend in Oklahoma, being held to just six hits on the day and falling 4-0 in game one and 9-0 in five innings in game two at Cameron University.
Â
Game 1 (UTPB 0, CU 4):
- Kelsey Valo led UTPB with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate in game one while Angelina Arriaga had a hit, a walk and a stolen base.
- Arriaga hit a one-out single down the right field line in the top of the first inning before CU's Madison Fulfer (3-4) recorded eight straight outs (7 groundouts) and pitched back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the second inning and third inning (3 straight groundouts).
- Arriaga broke up the streak of outs by Fulfer with a leadoff walk in the fourth inning before later getting UTPB into scoring position for the first time with her stolen base.
- In the fifth inning UTPB put two runners on base for the first time in the game when a one-out single to center by Valo was followed by a hit by pitch by Michele Balcazar, but a double play grounded to third base ended the inning.
- Fulfer allowed four hits, one walk and four strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.
- For UTPB, Jessica Cantrell (5-5) pitched all six innings and allowed five hits, four total runs, two earned runs, and one walk to go along with eight strikeouts. She allowed a run on a sacrifice fly after a leadoff double and a balk in the second inning, allowed two runs after a leadoff hit by pitch was followed by two doubles in the fourth inning, and allowed one last run after another sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
- Cameron only outhit the Falcons by one (5-4).

Game 2 (UTPB 0, CU 9):
- Stormee Reed (7-6) pitched a five-inning, two-hit shutout in which she struck out 10 batters without a single walk.
- Reed, a 2025 Second-Team All-Lone Star Conference selection, was even more effective this year than her performance last year against UTPB in which she pitched a complete game and allowed just one run and three hits while again striking out 10 in a 4-1 win.
- Arriaga again had a hit for UTPB, singling to left field with one out in the first inning for the second game in a row.
- After an error to lead off the top of the fourth inning, UTPB put two runners into scoring position for the first time on the day as Keri Sanford (error) and Carlee Quintero (single) both had a steal of second base. However, back-to-back strikeouts by Reed ended the scoring threat.
- Cameron, meanwhile, hit a two-out double followed by a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, added to its lead (3-0) with back-to-back one-out singles in the second inning, and then totaled four hits (3 singles, 1 double) in a two-run bottom of the third inning to go up 5-0.
- Cameron's four-run fifth inning to end the game featured a solo home run after a sacrifice fly, and ended with a two-run triple to left center field as UTPB could only record one out before the run-rule.
- Both home runs for Cameron came courtesy of Haley Gardella, who already has 14 home runs this season and was a member of the First-Team All-LSC and LSC All-Freshman Team in 2025 after hitting 12 home runs as a rookie.
Â
Team Records:
- UTPB falls to 9-16 overall and 2-14 in the LSC while Cameron improves to 13-16 and 6-12. The Aggies have yet to split a series in conference play so far this season.
- After being shutout just once in its first 10 conference games of the season, UTPB has now been shut out five times in its last six games, including all four games this weekend. In addition, the Falcons have suffered a streak of at least four straight shutouts in six straight seasons (2021-26).
- UTPB has only beaten Cameron once in their last 12 games dating back to the start of the 2022 season.
- The Aggies made the 2025 Lone Star Conference Tournament and had an incredible second half of the season as they went on a nine-game win streak throughout the month of April. Cameron finished off their conference play with an even 22-22 record and 29-24 overall record.
Coach's Quote:
- UTPB Head Softball Coach David Martinez said, "Timely hitting was today's theme. We got runners on base, we had our chances, but we did not get the timely hits to score the runs. Jess threw well enough to win, and all of our pitchers today gave us a chance, but our hitters just did not step up today. We will see what we can do Wednesday to bounce back."

Next Up: UTPB returns home next weekend to host its rescheduled doubleheader against the University of the Southwest (N.M.) starting at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. UTPB will then return to conference play by hosting The University of Texas at Dallas starting at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 22.
