LAREDO, Texas (February 7, 2026) – The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team scored three runs in the eighth inning to take the lead and scored three more in the ninth inning for some much-needed insurance runs, and in the end the Falcons earned a 10-8 comeback victory for their first road win of the season at Texas A&M International University.
UTPB (2-3 overall, 2-3 Lone Star Conference) never led until the eighth inning, and after falling behind 2-0 after the first inning, the Falcons came back to tie the game three times, knotting it all up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth, 3-3 in the top of the fifth, and 4-4 in the top of the seventh. All three times, TAMIU (2-3, 2-3) answered with at least one run in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead.
The hit that put the Falcons out in front (7-6) for the first time in the game was a three-run homer by
Gael Bernal with one out in the eighth inning.
UTPB added three insurance runs in the ninth inning, with all three runs coming on two outs after an error extended the inning. The final two runs came courtesy of a two-run double to center field by the new catcher,
Hudson Mitchell, and those runs would essentially be the winning runs after TAMIU started the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back hit by pitches and scored two unearned runs on an error. With one out and a runner on second, the Dustdevils sent the tying run to the plate two times, but a swinging strikeout by
Alex Thrasher was followed by a lineout to second base to stall the rally and end the game.
Sebastian Lozoya (1-0) earned the win for UTPB after pitching a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning.
The UTPB pitching staff combined to allow just five hits, but was hampered by six hit by pitches.
Earlier in the game for UTPB,
Carlos Chavez was 3-for-5 and hit a pair of game-tying RBI-doubles in the fifth and seventh innings.
In addition, leadoff man
Carter Chaney was 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
Head Coach
Justin Phillips said, "I am proud of the way our guys responded after yesterday. We played good enough to win today.
Damian Robles did not have his best stuff today, but he kept us in the game. Offensively, we had several guys step up today, and the three-run home run really pushed us ahead from Gael."
The final game of the series between UTPB and TAMIU will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, from Laredo, Texas. It is also Super Bowl Sunday.
