LAREDO, Texas (February 8, 2026) – The UT Permian Basin baseball team gave up 14 runs for the second time in the series and finished with its lowest hit total (6) of the season so far, falling 14-3 in seven innings in the series finale at Texas A&M International University on Super Bowl Sunday.
Starting pitcher
Timmy LaChappa (0-2) started the game with a hit by pitch followed by a single and a walk to load the bases with nobody out, and ultimately allowed seven runs and eight hits in his 3.1 innings. He allowed a two-out, two run single in the first inning; allowed a pair of two-out RBI-doubles in the second inning; and pitched a 1-2-3 third inning before being chased with a two-run triple in the fourth inning.
The offense for TAMIU (3-3 overall, 3-3 Lone Star Conference) had three players with three hits, including Ciro Benavides going 3-for-4 with five RBI's and three RBI-hits (single, double, triple), Saul Soto going 3-for-4 with an RBI-double and a solo home run, and Jesus Sosa going 3-for-3 and leading the team with four runs scored.
For UTPB (2-4, 2-4),
Daylon Jefcoats was 2-for-3 with two two-out home runs in the fifth inning (two-run home run) and the seventh inning (solo home run).
Leadoff man
Carter Chaney also reached base twice with a hit and a walk after reaching base four times during game two.
The Dustdevils recorded 31 hits in the series, scoring a total of 36 runs in three games. Ciro Benavides recorded nine hits and eight RBI's against the Falcons, going 9-of-11 on the weekend.

- Carter Chaney hit .500 (3-6) with three walks and three runs scored in two games.
- Demetrius Deramus hit .364 (4-11) with three runs scored and two doubles.
- Carlos Chavez hit .300 (3-10) with two runs scored and two doubles.
- Daylon Jefcoats also hit .300 (3-10), and smashed two home runs for three RBI's on Sunday.
- Gael Bernal led the team with four RBI's, including three on a three-run home run to help win game two of the series.
