Rooted in Legacy: Traylen Suel Reflects on Black History Month

2/27/2026 3:00:00 PM

Meet Traylen Suel, a UTPB football player who is a senior majoring in Human Performance, who views Black History Month as a time to reflect, honor, and celebrate the lasting impact of Black leaders, innovators, and communities throughout history.

"Black history to me is a way of looking back and remembering all of the black people that came before me and the impacts they made on our history and how it is still last into the present," said Suel. "There are so many different ways that our people have had a lasting effect on the world and changes our entire way of living and black history month is a way of pointing out and celebrating that."

Celebrating Black identity has always been rooted in family and togetherness for Suel. Growing up, those celebrations often came in the form of family reunions, cookouts, and gatherings filled with food.

"My family and I have always celebrated Black history by coming together for reunions, parties, or cookouts. We cook foods from our culture like smoked ribs, mac and cheese, collard greens, fried catfish, and potato salad," said Suel. "These events are held on weekends multiple times per year. When as many family members as possible can come together spend some time together and play like dominoes and spades."

An influential quote that continues to resonate with Suel is simple but powerful: "Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses."

For Suel, UTPB has played a major role in shaping his college experience, offering more than just an education.

"What I love most about UTPB is the people and the endless amount of support shown by everyone no matter what I've ever needed. My coaches, other students, professors, advisors, and all other faculty members make this place feel like home," said Suel. "Coming onto campus everyday seeing the good energy and smiles on everyone's faces make being here at UTPB a great experience."
