SAN ANGELO, Texas (January 13, 2026) – The University of Texas Permian Basin women's basketball team outscored Angelo State University 19-10 in the second quarter and 21-14 in the third quarter to pull away, and in the end the Falcons were victorious by a final score of 76-67 over the Rambelles on Tuesday night in San Angelo, Texas.
Madison Walters led all players in points (25) and rebounds (8), a career-high in both categories, all while shooting 9-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from three.
Jonesha Neal was next with a season-high 18 points, six rebounds and four assists. It was just the second double-digit scoring game of the season for Neal, who shot 5-for-9 from the field, 2-for-3 from three, and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.
Neal and
Kenadi Rising (12 points) both added two 3-pointers for the Falcons, who made a season-high 10 3-pointers in the contest.
UTPB trailed 9-2 after a trio of 3-pointers in the first 3:01 of the game by ASU, but then had a stretch where it made five of six shots and took its first lead of the game at 12-11 after a 3-pointer by
Mikalah Buckley rolled in with 3:59 left in the opening period.
The Falcons, however, were held scoreless the rest of the way in the first quarter as ASU took a 15-12 lead. Both teams shot 5-for-13 (38.46 percent) from the field in the first quarter and both committed at least six turnovers.
UTPB retook the lead (16-15) less than a minute and a half into the second quarter as a nice pass by Neal went to
Waikimihia Douglas-Karauna for a layup.
The Falcons held ASU scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the second quarter, and then two ties and one lead change later, UTPB took back the lead for good as Walters banked in a deep 3-pointer to make it 25-22 with 3:14 left in the first half.
A minute and a half later, Walters bounced in another 3-pointer to make it 28-22 Falcons, her third 3-pointer of the first half, and then approaching the one-minute mark in the second quarter, Rising connected from long range on the assist by Walters to make it 31-24.
UTPB shot a very strong 61.54 percent (8-13) from the field in the second quarter, improving its overall shooting percentage to 50 percent (13-26) for the game, all while the defense held ASU to just 26.67 percent (4-15) shooting in the second quarter.
UTPB tied its largest lead of the game to that point when Douglas-Karauna sank a long 2-point jumper to make it 35-28 2:17 into the second half, and did so again when a steal and layup by Walters made it 37-30. Then 4:11 into the third quarter, a strong offensive rebound and opportunistic putback by Walters made it a nine-point game (39-30).
The Falcons had held the Rambelles to a 1-for-6 start to the third quarter with five straight misses before ASU cut its deficit down to four points (39-35) past the halfway mark in the period. Fortunately, Rising made her second 3-pointer of the game to make it 42-35 on the next Falcons' possession.
UTPB did not shoot its first free throws of the night until with 2:25 left in the third quarter when Walters went 2-for-2 from the line to make it 44-37 UTPB. It was the fourth time in the third quarter UTPB took a seven-point lead, and then for the second time in the period, Walters came up with a steal and a layup, making it a nine-point lead (46-37) for the second time in the quarter.
On the next UTPB possession, Walters drew the attention of the defense and found Neal for a 3-pointer to make it a 10-point game (49-39), and then UTPB began to pull away in the final minute of the third quarter when
Jasmin Holt scored a layup to make it a 12-point margin (51-39). Neal would add a free throw to make it a 13-point game (52-39) heading into the fourth quarter.
The third quarter saw the Falcons make eight field goals and shoot over 50 percent for the second quarter in a row while ASU made one less field goal than the previous quarter and shot just 23.08 percent (3-13).
Then on UTPB's first possession of the fourth quarter, Neal sank her second 3-pointer of the second half, UTPB's eighth 3-pointer of the game, as the Falcons' lead continued to increase, this time to 14 points (55-41).
Walters would hit yet another deep 3-pointer to make it 60-47 3:13 into the fourth quarter.
After its customary strong defense in the second and third quarters, UTPB had to use its offense to keep its distance from ASU in the fourth quarter as the Rambelles shot 60 percent (9-15) with 28 points in the fourth quarter.
The largest lead of the game was 15 points (69-54) after two free throws by Neal with just 2:15 on the clock in the final period.
UTPB did struggle to put the game away from the free throw line, shooting just 7-for-14 from the line in the final 1:35 while ASU scored 12 points in the final 2:10 of the game.
The Falcons finished the game by shooting at least 50 percent in each of the final three quarters, made at least two 3-pointers in all four quarters, shot 47.6 percent from three for the game, and held the Rambelles to 37.5 percent from the field and 38.9 percent shooting from three.
It was UTPB's second-highest scoring conference game this season. The Falcons' offensive exploits came against an Angelo State team that entered the game ranked first in the Lone Star Conference in defensive field goal percentage (34.8).

I would have liked to make more free throws, but we shot great from the field and from three. On to the next one."
With the victory over its rival, UTPB improves to 11-6 overall and rises to three games above .500 in LSC play (6-3) for the first time this season. It was UTPB's first win at ASU since November 18, 2014, and was its fourth win in the last six games against the Rambelles over the last three seasons.
