Baseball lands three on Academic All-District® Team

ODESSA, Texas (June 3, 2025) – Nolan LaChappa, Jack Haggerty and Brent Rigtrup of The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team were each named to the Academic All-District® Team, selected by College Sports Communicators.

Nolan LaChappa is a senior left-handed pitcher from Hemet, California, who holds a 3.68 cumulative grade point average in human performance. LaChappa had 13 appearances, 11 starts, 57.2 innings pitched, one complete game, a 5-4 record, an 8.43 ERA, 89 hits allowed, 65 total runs allowed, 54 earned runs allowed, 20 walks allowed, and 56 strikeouts on the season. He led the Falcons in wins and strikeouts and was third in innings pitched. He was the lone UTPB starting pitcher with a winning record this season. He was 13th in the Lone Star Conference in wins and was 16th in innings pitched.

A little bit less than halfway through the season, a complete-game victory from LaChappa helped lead UTPB to a 14-4 seven-inning win over Eastern New Mexico University (Mar. 8). LaChappa threw four scoreless innings and 117 pitches and finished with seven hits, four total runs, two earned runs, one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings against the Greyhounds. LaChappa then earned his second win in a row and pitched 6.1 innings allowing two hits, two total runs and a season-low one earned run while walking three and striking out a season-high 11 batters in a 12-2 win at Cameron University (Mar. 15). He pitched three 1-2-3 innings in the first five innings and shutout the Aggies in all but one inning. LaChappa later improved to 3-3 on the season with five innings pitched allowing four hits, five runs, three walks and six strikeouts in a 23-8 win over Sul Ross State University (Apr. 6). Then in a 10-4 win against Oklahoma Christian University (Apr. 12), LaChappa faced just nine batters, had two pickoffs, and got a 4-6-3 double play in the first three innings and finished with 6.1 innings pitched allowing nine hits, four runs, one walk and four strikeouts. It was his second time this season earning back-to-back wins in back-to-back starts. LaChappa then earned his third win in as many starts and pitched the first four innings allowing six hits, four runs, four walks and two strikeouts in a 9-5 win in his final road start of the season at St. Mary's University (Apr. 18). LaChappa was also named First-Team All-Inland Empire Conference in 2023 at Mt. San Jacinto College and helped the Eagles qualify for the CCCAA Regional for the first time in seven years. He made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his four semesters at UTPB: Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.

Jack Haggerty is a senior left fielder from Mission Viejo, California, who has a 3.59 GPA and is currently in energy land management. A three-year Falcon and a 2024 Second-Team All-Lone Star Conference selection, Haggerty started in all 49 of his games played in (48 starts in left field, 1 at designated hitter) this season. He recorded a .340 batting average, 162 at bats, 44 runs, 55 hits, 12 doubles, 25 RBI's, 67 total bases, a .414 slugging percentage, 21 walks, 12 hit by pitches, a .449 on-base percentage, nine sacrifice bunts, and was 7-for-9 on stolen base attempts. He was one of five players on the team to play in at least 49 games. He was first on the team in sacrifice bunts and was tied for first in stolen bases, second in hit by pitches, third in runs scored, and fourth in both hits and doubles. He was also third on the team in on-base percentage and was fourth in batting average among eligible players. Haggerty's nine sacrifice bunts were tied for 17th in NCAA Division II (five behind the national leaders). He was also ranked 46th in the country in toughest to strikeout (13.5 K AVG.). He had 18 multi-hit games and had 11 games with at least two runs scored. Defensively, he had 68 putouts and a .947 fielding percentage (4 errors in 75 chances).

Haggerty was 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch and four runs scored in his first four plate appearances in a 14-4 win against Eastern New Mexico University (Mar. 8). In the series against Sul Ross State University (Apr. 4-7), Haggerty hit .500 (7-for-14) and scored 10 runs while adding four RBI's and three doubles. He scored three runs in a 19-5 win in the series opener against the Lobos (Apr. 4); was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two doubles in a 23-8 win in game two (Apr. 6); added two more runs scored in a 15-14 win in game three (Apr. 6); and hit 3-for-6 with four RBI's, two runs scored and a pair of two-run singles in back-to-back innings in a 26-11 win in the series finale (Apr. 7). He made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in five of his six semesters at UTPB: Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Spring 2025.

Brent Rigtrup is a graduate student catcher from Las Cruces, New Mexico. This semester he began his master's degree in energy business after graduating with his bachelor's degree in management with a 3.58 GPA. A three-year Falcon, Rigtrup started in all 50 games (36 at catcher and 14 at designated hitter) and hit .383 in 162 at bats. He also posted 42 runs, 62 hits, 15 doubles, three home runs, 52 RBI's, 86 total bases, a .531 slugging percentage, 29 walks, seven hit by pitches, a .492 on-base percentage, and was 3-for-4 on stolen base attempts. He was one of four Falcons to start in all 50 games this season. He was first on the team in batting average and on-base percentage and was third in slugging percentage among eligible players. He led the team in walks (five more than the next player) and was second on the team in RBI's; was third in hits, doubles and total bases; and was fourth in runs scored and fifth in home runs. He ranked 16th in the Lone Star Conference in batting average. He totaled 21 multi-hit games, including seven three-hit contests. He had a pair of four-game multi-hit streaks during the season and at one point, he had at least two hits in seven straight games. He had 15 games with two or more RBI's and scored at least two runs in a game 10 times. He also had two series this season in which he hit five doubles. Defensively, he had 187 putouts, 30 assists, a .982 fielding percentage (4 errors in 221 chances), and 18 runners caught stealing. He was second on the team in putouts and total chances, and was fourth in assists. He tied for first in the conference in runners caught stealing.

Rigtrup finished 3-for-4 with four RBI's on a trio of RBI-hits in game three against Texas A&M International University (Feb. 8), and then in the series finale against the Dustdevils (Feb. 9), Rigtrup led the Falcons with four runs scored, three RBI's (for the second game in a row) and two walks while adding his first home run of the season (two-run homer) in what was ultimately a 16-12 win. Against Eastern New Mexico University, Rigtrup finished 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a pair of run-scoring doubles, including a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning, in a 14-4 seven-inning win in game three (Mar. 8). He then he hit 3-for-5 with three more doubles, including two doubles in the second inning, in a 16-8 win in game four against the Greyhounds (Mar. 9). In the series at Cameron University (Mar. 14-16), Rigtrup combined to hit .417 (5-for-12) with two doubles and a three-run home run and led the team with nine RBI's and four walks. In the series against Sul Ross State University (Apr. 4-7), Rigtrup combined to post a .625 batting average (10-for-16) with 12 runs scored, 10 RBI's and five doubles. Rigtrup was 3-for-3 with four runs scored in a 19-5 win in game one against the Lobos (Apr. 4); was 3-for-5 with four RBI's, three runs scored and two doubles in a 23-8 win in game two (Apr. 6); was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI's, including RBI-doubles in the first inning and the eighth inning, in a 15-14 win in game three (Apr. 6); and hit 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored in a 26-11 win in the series finale (Apr. 7). Rigtrup then led the Falcons in hitting for the second weekend in a row, hitting .545 with six hits while also leading the team with four walks and a .667 on base percentage against Oklahoma Christian University (Apr. 11-13). He had two hits in three of the four games against the Eagles and was 2-for-2 with two walks in a 10-4 win in game two (Apr. 12). Rigtrup scored a run in each of the final three games of the series against the Eagles, including scoring on a wild pitch in each of the final two games. He also had a runner caught from behind home plate in each of the final two games of the series. The Falcons' 9-5 win in game two at St. Mary's University (Apr. 18) was highlighted by a three-run home run in the fifth inning by Rigtrup, who added a two-run single later in the game to finish with a season-best five RBI's. Rigtrup finished the series against the Rattlers hitting .429 (6-for-14), and in addition to hitting both a two-run double and three-run home run, led the team with nine RBI's, four walks and a .556 on-base percentage. Rigtrup also had two hits with one run scored in each of the final three games of the series at St. Mary's, and totaled nine RBI's over the final three games. In the final series of the season against Lubbock Christian University (Apr. 25-27), Rigtrup was 2-for-4 with two RBI's in both game two and game four, and added a run scored during his Senior Day in the final game. Rigtrup ended his career by being named as one of UTPB's Edgardo Madrid & Associates Men's Student-Athletes of the Month for April after starting in all 17 games (10 catcher; 7 designated hitter) during the month. The month of April saw Rigtrup hit .500 while leading the UTPB baseball team in on-base percentage (.597), hits (29), RBI's (26) and walks (11). In all, he helped lead the Falcons to an 11-6 overall record (10-6 LSC) during the final month, accounting for over half of the team's 20 wins throughout the season. The Falcons did not lose a series during the month of April, sweeping one series and splitting the final three series. Rigtrup also made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in Spring 2023, Fall 2023, and Spring 2024.

The 2025 Academic All-District® Baseball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. To be eligible for CSC Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and must be a standout in competition. Eligible nominees for baseball must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played OR must start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games. For pitchers, a student-athlete must have made at least 17 appearances OR pitched 35 innings.

Rigtrup was selected as a CSC Academic All-America® finalist. Student-athletes selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists are denoted with an asterisk and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced July 1, 2025.
