Four golfers named Academic All-District®

ODESSA, Texas (June 17, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Bain landed four golfers on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Team. The honorees consisted of Juan Elias and Ioan Rowe from the men's team and Ainhoa Gurruchaga and Gabriela Maldonado from the women's team.

Juan Elias is a sophomore from Odessa, Texas, who holds a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average as a finance major. Elias played in eight tournaments spanning 23 rounds this season. He had a 79.74 scoring average (80.1 adjusted scoring average) and a 238.00 three-round average, and also had a low round of 72. He was ranked No. 136 in the South Central Region. At the Lone Star Conference Championship (Apr. 14-15), Elias shot 86-76-84 (246) and had the biggest improvement for UTPB from round one to round two – improving by 10 strokes and shooting plus-four during the second round. In his first year at UTPB this year, Elias made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in both semesters this year (Fall 2024, Spring 2025), both times with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Elias was a First Team NJCAA Academic All-American in 2023 and 2024 and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Odessa College, and he played in the Mexico Amateur in 2023.

Ioan Rowe is a sophomore from Swansea, Wales, who holds a 3.53 GPA major in management. Rowe played in 10 tournaments spanning 29 rounds. He had a 74.59 scoring average (73.9 adjusted scoring average) and a 223.89 three-round average. He had six rounds of par or under with a low round of 69. He also had one top-five finish and two top-10 finishes. He was ranked No. 51 in the South Central Region. Rowe shot 74-72-72 (218) and was even-par during each of the final two rounds to tie for a spot in the top-10 and help UTPB win the RJGA South Central Shootout (Sept. 30-Oct. 1). In the Spring, Rowe tied for fourth place after shooting 75-73 (148) and going plus-one during the final round at the Shadow Valley Invitational (Mar. 3-4). At the Lone Star Conference Championship (Apr. 14-15), Rowe shot just one-over-par during round two and finished at 78-73-86 (237). Rowe played for Wales in the Home Internationals and European Championship at Boys level. He also made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll three times (Fall 2023, Spring 2024 and Spring 2025) in his first four semesters at UTPB.

Ainhoa Gurruchaga is a senior from Ventosa, La Rioja, Spain, who holds a 3.84 GPA in psychology. Gurruchaga played in 10 events (7 tournaments) spanning 20 rounds this season. She had a 79.25 scoring average (78.8 adjusted scoring average). She had a low round of 74 that she achieved four times, including during her final round of the season at the LSC Championship. She had two top-10 finishes in tournaments. She was also 3-1 in dual matches and was the low scorer in one dual match. She was ranked No. 131 in the South Central Region. Gurruchaga, the 2023-24 LSC Newcomer of the Year and a 2024-25 LSC Golfer to Watch, opened her senior season in the Fall with a pair of top-10 finishes. After shooting plus-three during the first round of the season, Gurruchaga shot 74-77 (151) and tied for seventh place in UTPB's season opener at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate (Sept. 16-17). Gurruchaga was then two-over par during round one and shot 74-77 (151) to tie for seventh place for the second tournament in a row at the CSU-Pueblo Fall Invite (Oct. 7-8). After shooting 74 during the first round during each of her first two tournaments of the season, Gurruchaga did the same during the final round of each of her last two tournaments of the season. At the LSC Championship (Apr. 21-22), Gurruchaga shot 77-81-74 (232), was two-under-par through eight holes during the third round, and finished at two-over at the end of the final round to move up eight spots from round two and place 31st. Gurruchaga was the 2021-22 SSAC Freshman of the Year and was a member of the All-Freshman Team and the All-Conference First-Team at Faulkner University. She also made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of her four semesters at UTPB: Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.

Gabriela Maldonado is a senior from Bogota, Columbia, with a 3.65 GPA in management. Maldonado played in seven events (4 tournaments) spanning 13 rounds this Spring season. She had a 77.08 scoring average (76.2 adjusted scoring average) and had a low round of 72. She had one top-five finish and two top-20 finishes in tournaments. She was also 2-1 in dual matches and was the low scorer in one dual match. She was ranked No. 165 in NCAA Division II and No. 47 in the South Central Region. Maldonado made her season debut in the Spring at the Jack Brown Memorial (Feb. 3-4) and shot 82-72 (154) while finishing at even-par during round two to finish in fifth place. She then led the Falcons again with a top-20 finish for the second tournament in a row to open the Spring season after shooting 76-77-77 (230) and going just four-over-par during round one to finish in 19th place at the Rattler Invitational (Feb. 24-25). Maldonado led UTPB in all four of its traditional tournaments this Spring season, finishing in fifth place at the Jack Brown Memorial (Feb. 3-4), 19th at the Rattler Invitational (Feb. 24-25), 23rd at the RJGA Palm Valley Classic (Apr. 4-5), and 27th at the Lone Star Conference Championship (Apr. 21-22). Maldonado shot plus-four, plus-five and plus-six (76-77-78; 231), respectively, throughout the conference tournament and was tied for second in the field with 35 total pars. Her 27th-place finish was a modest improvement from her 39th-place finish at the conference championship last season. Maldonado was a 2022-23 Team Captain and a 2023 All-American at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. She made it to regionals in 2023 as an individual for UAM, and for 2022-23 season, she was named to the All-GAC Women's Golf Second Team. She holds the UAM record for best scoring average in a single season in Blossoms history with an average score of 77.77. Maldonado made the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of her four semesters at UTPB: Fall 2023, Spring 2024, Fall 2024 and Spring 2024.

The 2024-25 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. To be eligible for CSC Academic All-District, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher and must be a standout in competition. Eligible nominees for golf must be in the lineup for 70 percent of an institution's TEAM SCORING events OR in the lineup at the conference championship tournament.
