ALPINE, Texas (April 7, 2025) – The University of Texas Permian Basin University baseball team could not be stopped in its quest to finish off a four-game sweep of Sul Ross State University as the Falcons combined for 23 runs in a four-inning stretch beginning in the fourth inning and defeated the Lobos by a final score of 26-11.
UTPB (13-24 overall, 13-23 Lone Star Conference) scored five runs on just three hits in the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead.
Jack Haggerty had a two-RBI single up the middle,
Carson Johnson had an RBI-double to center field, and
Brent Rigtrup had his second RBI of the game with a groundout to second base.
In the bottom of the fourth, however, Sul Ross (4-37, 3-37) nearly tied it up as the Lobos scored six runs on eight hits, hit a one-out solo home run to left field and finished the inning with a three-run home run down the left field line to make it just a one-run game (8-7).
UTPB was able to answer by putting up its second-straight five-run inning in the top of the fifth. After
Bode Stewart singled and
Andrew Prado and
Kaleb Scull both walked to load the bases with nobody out, Haggerty and Johnson both delivered RBI-hits for the second inning in a row as Haggerty hit a two-RBI single up the middle and Johnson followed on the next at bat with a three-run home run to make it 13-7 Falcons.
The Falcons essentially put the game away by scoring nine runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Scull brought in the first run of the inning with an RBI-double to center field and also brought in the final run with an RBI-single to right field.
Makai DeSoto added a three-run home run in the seventh inning. DeSoto was one of three Falcons with four RBI's.
Scull finished 2-for-4 with four runs scored, two RBI's and two walks, and had two RBI-hits (double, single) in the sixth inning. Johnson was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, four RBI's, two walks, two doubles and a home run. Haggerty hit 3-for-6 with four RBI's, two runs scored and a pair of two-run singles. Rigtrup hit 2-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
Taylor McDaniel was 3-for-4, Stewart was 2-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI's, and Prado was the fourth Falcon with four runs scored.
Trevor Barth (1-8) earned his first win of the season on the mound and finished with five innings pitched allowing 10 hits, seven runs, four walks and six strikeouts.
UTPB set a new season-high in runs (26), hits (20), RBI's (21) and walks (10).

Justin Phillips spoke, "It's not easy to sweep anyone in this league, and we found a way to do it. We just have to keep putting games together."
In all for the four-game series, UTPB finished with 83 runs, 64 hits, 22 doubles, six home runs, 30 extra-base hits, 108 total bases, 67 RBI's, 28 walks, nine hit by pitches, and a .444 batting average. The leaders over the weekend were Rigtrup with a .625 batting average (10-for-16), 12 runs scored, 10 RBI's and five doubles; Johnson with a .571 average (8-for-14), 13 runs, 11 RBI's, six walks, four doubles and two home runs; McDaniel with a .533 average (8-for-15), eight RBI's and four runs; Scull with a .500 average (8-for-16), 11 runs, eight RBI's, four walks, four doubles and two home runs; and Haggerty with a .500 average (7-for-14), 10 runs, four RBI's and three doubles.
UT Permian Basin returns home next weekend to host Oklahoma Christian University. Game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, April 11, from Roden Field.
