ODESSA, Texas (April 27, 2025) – For the second game in a row, Lubbock Christian University's Brevin McCool was left standing in the on-deck circle as Shea Bowen went down swinging with the bases loaded to end the game, this time allowing The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team to withstand a comeback by the Chaparrals and hold on to an 8-7 win during its Senior Day and season finale.
All of UTPB's offensive output came in an eight-run bottom of the second inning. The inning featured six hits, two walks and two hit by pitches for the Falcons.
After a hit by pitch by
Makai DeSoto and a single down the right field line by
Taylor McDaniel to put two runners on with one out, the first run came on an RBI-single to right field by
Andrew Prado.
Bode Stewart then walked to load the bases, and
Ethan Ralph hit an RBI-single through the left side to score McDaniel and make it 2-0.

Prado scored on a fielder's choice by
Kaleb Scull, and then after
Jack Haggerty walked to keep the inning going, the first extra-base hit of the game was a two-run double to right field by
Carson Johnson.
Brent Rigtrup followed with a two-run single through the left side, and the final run came on an RBI-double to left field by DeSoto as the Falcons batted around and sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.
Rigtrup, Ralph and McDaniel each finished with two hits for the Falcons while Stewart walked twice and Haggerty finished with both a double and a walk.
It was a great Senior Day on the rubber for
Trevor Barth (4-8), who earned his fourth win in a row to end the year and threw 131 pitches across 6.1 innings while allowing six hits, one run, two walks and six strikeouts.
McCool started off the top of the ninth inning against
Brock Robarts with a groundout to shortstop, and two batters later, another groundout to short made it two outs for the Chaps.
However, that is where things began to get interesting, and after back-to-back singles, an error at third base both extended the game and allowed a run to score to make it 8-6.
Bryan Adams then came in to pitch, and a walk on the next at bat was followed by a wild pitch to allow another run to score and make it 8-7, but after another walk, Adams finally got the swing and a miss by Bowen to end the game.
Bowen was previously caught looking to end the game in UTPB's 10-6 game-two win during Saturday's doubleheader the day before.
After going 2-for-4 with two home runs to break the Lone Star Conference single-season record in game one of the series, McCool was held to 2-for-11 with zero runs scored and just one RBI over the final three games.
UTPB's Head Baseball Coach
Justin Phillips spoke after the Senior Day win, saying "I am proud of the way our guys completed today. Barth pitched really well, and we are proud of our seniors. It was an extremely challenging series against a highly-accomplished program, and we found a way to split with them. I am extremely proud and grateful to lead this program. We definitely feel like we underperformed, but we are super excited for the future."
UTPB finishes its season 20-30 overall and 19-29 in the Lone Star Conference, which was good for ninth place. After starting the year just 3-19, the Falcons went 17-11 after that to reach the 20-win mark. The Falcons did not lose a series in the month of April and lost just one of their final seven series of the season.
