Will Tate chosen to represent UTPB at NCAA Regional Tournament in California

ODESSA, Texas (April 25, 2025) – UT Permian Basin men's golfer Will Tate has been selected to compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament as an individual. The NCAA has announced the field of 80 teams and 32 student-athletes competing as individuals that have been selected to participate in regional competition of the 2025 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships. Regional play will be conducted May 8-10. The tournament that Tate will compete in will be at the Victoria Club in Riverside, California, where Cal State San Bernardino will serve as the host institution.

Tate was named Second-Team All-Lone Star Conference for his performance during the 2024-25 regular season, and then earned a spot on the LSC All-Tournament Team after tying for fifth place at the 2025 Lone Star Conference Championship at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club. Including the LSC Championship, Tate has played in 10 tournaments this season spanning 29 rounds, had a 71.9 adjusted scoring average, and had 13 rounds of par or under golf with a low round of 65. He had one tournament win, four top-five finishes, five top-10 finishes and seven top-20 finishes. Tate is currently ranked No. 83 in NCAA Division II and No. 16 in the South Central Region.

"Obviously this is great not only for Will, but for our golf program," said UTPB Head Golf Coach Paul Chavez. "I have stated loud and clear all along that Will was one of the top players in our conference, and he has proven that he is not just one of the top players in our conference, but in our region as well. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do in California."

Tate was named a 2024-25 LSC Golfer to Watch had a top-20 finish in each of the first three tournaments of the year, including a runner-up finish for which he was named the LSC Men's Golfer of the Week after leading the UTPB men's team to the RJGA South Central Shootout team championship. The highlight of the season came as Tate claimed the first individual win of his career at the Midwestern State Invitational. In addition to becoming just the third-ever UTPB golfer to win a tournament, Tate jumped into the top-five of two categories in the UTPB record book. His single-round score of 65 during round one ranks as the fifth-lowest in program history while his three-round score of 207 is tied for fifth. After winning the Midwestern State Invitational, Tate was named both the LSC Men's Golfer of the Week and the UTPB Edgardo Madrid & Associates Men's Student-Athlete of the Month for the second time during the 2024-25 season. In addition, Tate is now second all-time with four top-five finishes in his career at UTPB, all coming this season at the RJGA South Central Shootout (2nd place), the Shadow Valley Invitational (4th place), the Midwestern State Invitational (1st place) and the LSC Championship (5th place).

When it comes to the regional, at a minimum, the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional will advance to the finals, May 19-23 at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The finals will be hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

Tournaments will be conducted at four regional sites with regional pairings as follows:
  • Atlantic and East
  • Central and Midwest
  • South and Southeast
  • South Central and West
